When trying to hook up an new pc all that happens is it makes a beeping noise. its second hand. There is nothing on the monitor. It just beeps away. instead of starting up.

    Any ideas.

    cheers

It depends exactly on the number of beeps as this actually tells you what the problem is. But an immediate guess would be that your RAM sticks are loose and need to be reseated properly.

ok well that makes sense as i have put another stick in. does it matter that two are pc3200 ddr and one is 2700 ddr. would you recommend i take the latter one out?

    Cheers

Well even if they did work together the speed would be restricted to the slower of the two. So if I were you I'd try just the faster of the two first. If that works you could try putting the second one back but I suspect it may fail again.

Well most RAM sticks are the same size but not always. :eek In my PC I've three sticks with one of them slightly less "tall" than the other two.

If both sticks are 3200 DDR then they should work together. :)

Have you tried just the slower of the two?

ok i have taken two out and left one 5412 mb stick in, now this has worked it boots up now but now i get a message while installing widows xp on it saying i have to creat an XP compatible partition size between 1 and 7685. the disk is 7686. do you kmnow what this is. or what number i should create it at.

crazy stuff.at least the memory thing is sorted

    thanks for that.

You may need to put more than just 512Mb of RAM with XP.

As for the partition size I'm not quite sure what you mean by the numbers 1 to 7685. Try looking at this

Well i have put a stick of 1024mb. still it asks me to create a partition. its simply says enter an amount between 1 and 7662 MB of partition space and hit enter. regardless of what amount i hit it doesnt move on from this screen.

    thanks

What are you using to create this partition? The XP set-up? FDisk?

It appears to be a copy of the original XP disk. I have an original somewhere. Would that help?

Look at this for doing your partition. :)

The pc that has this partitioning problem isnt connect up to anywhwere. How can I fix it if it wont even boot up I've seen cheap items on ebay that claim to reboot any pc with or without an operating system but i'm not sure if that would work. and I dont want to download anythihg like that on my pc thats working fine. I tried my genuine copy of XP and still when it asks me to create a partition size between 1 and 7685 MB It doesnt accept any value. Something that hould be so simple isnt. I cant understand how this is even a problem as the pc is second hand and was in perfect working order.

    regards

I would try to create (or get hold of) a bootable floppy disk which also has FDISK. I would then try to partition the disk with this making sure sure you select large disk support. See here for fairly good instructions. :)
