Ok, i recently bought a new pc... so i thought hey why not run a game server /webserver off my old pc(2ghz amd athlon). Now, when my game server wasnt running... sometimes i would run Video files outputting to my TV, which seemed fine at first.

Recently though the pc would sometimes not boot up straight away or i would get a series of long beeps until i reset it. Today, the pc froze while i was using a remote desktop program and then wouldnt reboot... No beeps just turned on.

I then took the pc upstairs and plugged it into a monitor where it seemed like it booted fine... i went into bios... couldn't see anything noticably wrong(recently loaded optimized defaults btw) and when i went to exit bios the pc reset and then nothing... no beeps no video signal....... And everytime i reset it i would get the same thing.

Does anyone have ne ideas as to what might be wrong with it? As this is getting me worried now :-(

    Thanks in advance ^^

when i say a series of long beeps.... i mean it will keep repeatedly beeping unless i reset the comp,

so what were talking about is this "de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-........." with the pc hanging (kinda sounds like a heartbeat monitor??) is this correct?
try checking all your settings in bios then check all connections reseat all cards ---
sounds like somthing is toast (hopefully not the mobo!) most likley a pci-agp card ??

yes thats correct ... sounds like a heartbeat monitor.... Its been doing that for quite a while tho... every now and then ... But i just thought it was like the cpu overheating or something

ok, just turned the computer on again... its displaying video output...

    But getting the error message

Warning! CPU has been changed or Overclock Fail!
Please re-enter the settings in the cmos and remember to save before quit!

    ....

I had this same error message a couple of weeks ago... all i did was go into bios and load optimised defaults... and it worked fine well sorta....

Thing is i have never changed the settings apart from that... any idea what could be causing this?

maybe dead battery...somthin is resetting the bios?

perhaps... but would that also cause the video signal to sometimes not be sent to the monitor... or something along those lines.

I checked the Vbat in bios... its fluctuating between 2.9V and 2.95V .... as far as i know doesnt that mean the CMOS Battery is ok?

if your bios setting are resetting automatically as you have to keep reloading optimised settings you may need a new cmos battery,to find out what the error beep is you will have to post the name of your bios pheonix, award, ect

Or the optimised settings dont agree with your installed hardware you will have to manually go through each bios setting and configure it to your installed hardware

Hmm oddly enough, the system loads up until i get that error message... i go into bios... and when i go to save to CMOS and exit... the video signal stops comming through.... and i keep getting an error BEEP ... That is until i switch the power off at the mains and then reboot again... at which point i get the CPU error message again....... -_-

does it boot with fail safe options?

im not really sure if it boots with fail-safe..... How do i check?

underneath or above the option in bios load optimised settings select fail safe settings save and reboot ;)

    Update:

After resetting the computer..... it loaded into windows... took around 15 resets.... Now if i turn it off it may not be able to load again ... hmm

It has had trouble like this for a while now buts its only since yesterday that it got really bad.... Before i only needed to reset the computer once maybe twice...

    Now its like 15 times

Any ideas what this might be?

while in normal windows.... i put as much strain on the CPU as possible... (to an extent) and used speedfan monitor... it was reading out a 90% usage and a temp of around 55C. with regards to going into safe mode..... how would i go about finding the problem with that?

    in windows... it seems fine....

Its just before it loads windows it will keep comming up that error until it eventually loads... after many resets

This is the weirdest thing ever...... i really cant work out what component might be dodgy =/

Your going about your troubleshooting all wrong,at this point you dont want your computer to work ;) ,the more it works the more you get thrown off the scent of whats causing the problem, start again, remove all your add in cards, cdroms, use one stick of memory, press del when your computer is loading to go into bios find FAIL SAFE OPTIONS in BIOS underneath or above LOAD OPTIMISED SETTINGS this will load the bios settings that will give your comp the most chance of running, dont confuse this with safe mode which you enter by pressing F8 when windows is loading, when you select optimised settings as you have been doing sets your bios up for best performance it doesnt always work!

Get a pen and peice of paper from here on in write down any error messages, save and exit your bios, post how far your comp gets

ok, just started the comp again.... This time it got as far as checking the memory (got 1/3 of the way through it) and then froze .... so i reset the pc and the motherboard gave me the post code C1... which is the memory checking stage. At that time it was also giving me intermitant bleeps and no video signal was being displayed.... i reset the comp again ... same thing. It might load into windows again if i try later ... i just dont know its being very tempermental. Could the PSU really be causing this? ... i know your prolly thinking the memory is bust.. but it was working fine b4 and whilst i was in windows i ran a very memory intensive program which ran fine for 30 mins... Hmmm just lost =/

Thanks ill try that ^_^... although atm with everything in it i cant even get into bios... bit worrying

Sorry, when i say i cant get into the bios... i mean it doesnt even load up to the point that allows u to enter setup. It freezes 1/3 of the way through memory testing or just doesnt even give any video output.... Does random things like this... so pfft =/

ok just replaced the CMOS battery..... And reset the jumpers. Now everything loaded fine... windows no errors etc. Then when i tried to load optimised defaults (because the cpu was running 500Mhz below what it should.) and save to CMOS and Exit.... i was suddenly getting the exact same errors as before........ Bah. Anyone know what might be going on here?

One minute it works fine... then when i try to load optimised defaults it fux =/

As I have already said dont load optimised defaults,go through your bios settings and manually configure your fsb,the multi is locked so the only other thing I can think is your fsb is dropping from 166 to 133 or 133 to 100 cant remember which,so just raise it back up until your cpu is running at the right speed ;)
