PC crash during audio driver installation.

    Hi all.

My sound/audio worked fine, until a couple of days ago when I reformatted the C drive, only to realise that I hadn't taken into account the drivers, and found myself without an audio driver installed.

There is an audio card in there, though I'm pretty clueless about what's inside the computer, so please bear with me. Now I tried using a programme which searches for any drivers which need up-dating or installing and it brought up the audio soundcard, but then midway through installation of the driver, it reboots. I tried this multiple times, and once with all security programming completely off incase it was interfering, but again, it reboots.

Following other advice, I uninstalled any audio drivers, downloaded the Realtek Chipset driver, installed it, and then the audio driver, installed it, and again, a crash during the audio driver installation.

Following again, other advice, I uninstalled the drivers again, and installed the Realteak high definition audio driver, and then tried the audio driver, and again, a crash.

I then tried installing the SiS audio driver, but the installation would simply vanish when it got to 10%.

I am pretty much at my wits ends, I've been battling this thing for 3 days now, and I'm betting if it goes on much longer I will be in a padded cell by the end of the week. :-D

Here are some further details, which may help. First up, system spec:

And now, a small crash analysis of the last crash during the audio driver instalation, generated from WhoCrashed:

Here's hoping somebody can help me figure this out!

    Hi

As motherboard makers and yours is Gigabyte do custom spec the hardware and drivers from companies like Realtek its always best to start with the drivers the motherboard maker supplies, less likely for things to go wrong.

Uninstall the driver that you have already installed which is the Realtek one and delete the driver setup file as its not the one you need as you have SIS Audio, but form most onboard audio to work you need the Chipset driver for the motherboard (Northbridge and Southbridge) which allow the devices as in Audio, USB to be correctly ID'd.

Your drivers are here, so install the Chipset driver from SIS first (the version 1.17e) and reboot, then install the Audio one from SIS as in the SiS 7012 as your Everest log shows thats your Audio chipset.

May also need to istall the IDE driver as well, but check Device Manager for any Yellow ! marks and tell us what they are by once installed the above.

Sorry for the really late reply.

I did as you instructed, and the SIS Chipset Driver installed without a hitch. I then came to the SIS 7012 Audio driver, and at around 15% of install, I came to an error window. All that the window contained was " -5368770397 ". When I close this pop-up error window, another instantly follows, this time, the title of the window being 'Severe' and the message being: Fail to install audio driver for windows xp. setup will exit.

After this error, I checked in device manager and saw that Multimedia Audio Controller had an exclamation point next to it, so i uninstalled. I then proceeded again with the SIS 7012 Audio driver instal, and this time it completed and prompted to restart to complete installation.

Upon restarting, a pop appears informing: Found New Hardware: Multimedia Audio Controller and then a Windows Wizard panel appears asking me to install the driver. It's as though the computer isn't even registering the previous audio driver install in any way.

Use the steps in this post to install the driver via the Device Manager/Hardware Wizard. You'll need an 'unzipped' copy of the audio drivers, so follow the steps for installing and using TUGzip to unzip the SiS7012 driver. If you already have an unzipped folder with the drivers, then simply start with step 1; if the New Hardware Wizard is already open, you can skip to step 4. Just ignore the very first part of the instructions. Obviously, the first part is for a wireless device in a different PC, but everything after that very first part should be followed. If you have any questions, feel free to post.

Did as the walkthrough instructed, though halfway through installation, I get a pop-up saying:

    Files Needed:

The file 'ALCXWDM.SYS' on Realtek AC97 Audio Driver Disk is needed.

Type the file where the path is located, and then click on OK.

Now, I obviously don't have this file, which is one thing which is confusing me. The other is that the Hardware Wizard is trying to find a Realtek AC97 file when that isn't even the driver I am trying to install, and I haven't previously even downloaded the Realtek driver! (I have since formatted the C: drive and started again since my first post.)

I did some snooping on my computer (though I'm a beginner, so bare with me) and found that I have this installed on my computer:
REALTEK GbE & FE Ethernet PCI NIC Driver
Could this possibly be jamming the installation, for lack of a better term? I am assuming that it is something to do with my internet/wireless because of the 'ethernet' tag.

    Hi

As you reinstalled, just need to ask the issue of Audio is still with you? if so what Windows XP service pack level did you install or are you back to SP3?

Again install the Chipset Driver and reboot, on reboot enter your BIOS and double check the Audio is enabled, if not F10 to Save and Exit or if it is then just Exit.

This time get the lastest SIS 7012 Audio driver from SIS direct here

(if you have an security applications like Spybot installed then disable them and also make sure you are in the admin account when installing)

As for the Realtek Ethernet, no shouldnt be the cause of this, differning files and driver.

I am still experiencing the exact same problem with audio drivers.
I checked BIOS and audio is enabled, and I am still using Service Pack 3. I will go to the SIS website you linked in your last post and try the latest drivers. I'm willing to try absolutely anything at this point.

    EDIT:

Tried installed the new driver you pointed me to (I uninstalled the previous Audio Controller prior) and the install simply vanishes when it reaches around 10%.

    Hi

What security applications do you have installed, and if you disable them does that make any difference to the install of the driver?

Also try installing it in Safe Mode (F8 at boot) may or may not work, bit worth a try.

I'm currently using ESET NOD32, but I was using a different antivirus program previously and was still having the same problem.

I will try it in Safe Mode and report back.
