Hi, whilst my pc was on and running fine yesterday it froze on the desktop screen. The cursor would not move using the mouse and none of the keyboard prompts worked, ctrl-alt-delete or windows key etc.

Rightly or wrongly I then re-started the PC by holding down the manual start-up button on the front of the tower, this shut it down. I then pressed it again and the pc started up.
Now I have my desktop with all the icons and the cursor can be moved with the mouse, I can not however activate, move or double click any of the icons.
The system tray in the bottom right hand corner shows only the clock frozen at the time of last start up and a QuickTime icon.
I have posted on Major geeks before.
Please does anyone know what’s going on here?

Hi there you should have posted this in the malware section so that one of the Major Geeks i:e Malware experts can instruct you fully on what to do next with a step by step guide, in saying that though just be patient and you will get sorted.

What OS are you on? Have you added any new software or hardware that may have caused this issue?

Try F8 at boot and select "Last good configuration"

    Cheers...

Edit to add try to start in Safe mode. If thing work out restore the sys.

OK! I entered the setset and chose "last known good configuration"
It then started up, it has now frozen on the windows user name and password screen. I can see the cursor but it doesn't respond.
i'm running XP by the way.
The most recent hardware i've added is an iphone but that was 3 weeks ago.

Try another keyboard. When my keyboard goes funny (caps lock might be on and shouldn't) I can move the mouse briefly then the entire computer freezes so the mouse won't move.

    Brilliant, that worked.
I was using the original dell keyboard so a unpluged it and the start up is back to normal.
I'm using the same keyboard again now and all seems fine, do you think i need to get another keyboard or stick with this 1.

    many thanks again.:celebrate

If the keyboard works, it is okay. For some strange reason, every so often a computer will decide to load with caps lock on. When that happens (and either the keyboard doesn't have a caps lock light or I don't look), my computer locks up after I move the mouse. I go into the BIOS and reset so the caps lock is off - problem solved. I keep using the same keyboard.
