Desperate help required. My client needs her laptop back this evening and I have tried all day to solve this problem.
Each time a Norton virus scan is run, the laptop powers off at approx. 95% of the scan. I loaded spybot thinking it would be spyware and got the same. A different anti-virus program -AVG - did exactly the same. I can send a hijack log if this will help? Please somebody help me!!! Thanks
p.s. I completed the Norton on-line virus scan with no viruses showing.

Hi and thanks for the reply. I don't believe there is a sensor on the chip, but not sure how I could tell. If it is a heat problem, surely it would switch off whether I run the NAV, etc. programs or not. It hasn't crashed at any other point.

Nevertheless, could you tell me how I can check if there is a temp reporting program on the laptop. As I say, it belongs to a client.

    Thanks again,
    Richard

    Hi Robo.

Thanks for the advice, but the laptop has been running for ages now while I try to solve it and hasn't crashed once. I cannot see it being an overheating problem. But if I run NAV or AVG or spybot it will crash. No error messages, nothing. Just off! And only while I run these programs. I am at my wits end!!

If you don't want to download these apps , as you say its not your computer. In bois you might be able to see the cpu temp. i know i can in mine

Thanks to everyone for their replies. There is not a shortage of memory, and overheating was not a problem as every program ran fine except security/virus programs. This is where I am at now...

Having tried all sorts of things and ended up with half a solution, I thought I would report something back that might help the diagnosis. I followed all recommendations and eventually decided to completely remove everything NORTON. I am now running AVG which scans perfectly alright with all latest updates. My client wanted spybot, so I put that back on. Running spybot crashed the laptop, even though it had worked before loading AVG. Within spybot advanced there are sections to place a tick for checking various types, eg cookies.sbi, dialer.sbi, hijackers.sbi, etc. I ran spybot on each individually and with a bit of tweaking removed some spyware. Now each individual area runs safely with the exception of DIALER.SBI which crashes every single time. So the half-solve I refer to is that AVG runs fine, and spybot will run with the dialer.sbi unchecked. I have searched the registry for any dodgy looking dialers, and searched other obvious areas without success. Of course, this explains why spybot would crash, but not why NORTON AV would crash. I am at the stage now where I don't want to twiddle too much or re-load NAV, but wondered if this throws any light on the subject in your expert eyes?
    Thanks
    Richard

Hi, just out of curiousity. What version of Spybot are you running. V4,5... or V5? (NB: an update is also releasedof v5 I believe)

Have you tried it with version 4.5. If you want to uninstall version V5 make sure you check the Spybot site for un-install instructions.

    Also check out thread http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=33479

Some MG' ers including myself have gone back to 4.5 for the time being. Bazza

Think you mean ZoneAlarm, not Spybot. Spybot is only at 1.3. :)

I'm also betting on it being an overheating issue. What is the processor? Is a P4 or P4M? Those tend to overheat.

However, you could try a different virus scanner. Perhaps an online one.

da chicken, you are completely right of course. Silly me. Gotta keep on taking the tablets, looks like.

richlizard, I mean't what version of Spybot are you using.1.1, 1.2, 1.3 (3 or 4 different updates of this version). Might help to know, to help you with your problem. Bazza

I agree. A Spybot scan is pretty processor-intensive.

What kind of laptop are we talking about? I remember reading about a Sony PCG-F350 that developed the random shutdown syndrome. The problem supposedly originated at the cpu socket on the daughter card attached to the motherboard, and it happened to quite a few Sony Vaio laptops.
