pc desktop doesn't recognize new hard drive

installed a 120 GB ATA 8.0MB 7200 RPM into ny PC now it boots up and shows system disk error.

If this is a desktop (3.5") ATA/IDE drive, check the jumper pin settings. Be sure the pins are set to "CS" (cable select).

If this doesn't fix the problem, reply and we'll try some other ideas.

Also have you the Data Ribbon connected properly, The Pink/Red stripe should be facing you, and if cable select does not work as gman863 said try the others Master and Slave individually as depending on make and model of other HD's conflits can occur.

I have to ask, did you attempt to install an OS on the new hard drive? If not, then the error is normal because there is no operating system nor boot files on it.
Do you have a windows CD in the optical drive while trying to install? If you did not go into the BIOS and set the computer to boot from the CD, then the computer is trying to boot from the blank hard drive.

I changed the boot order in the phoenix award bios to cdrom first boot,and booted up with xp cd but still get the same message...system error install from cd,also tried to change boot order in f12 boot menu but it doesn't let me scroll up or down to change the boot order.

Did you test the disk? Is the CD disk bootable?
If the computer refuses to boot from the CD drive, with a bootable disk in it, then double check the connections to be sure the CD drive is properly attached. (Perhaps something came loose when you installed the new hard drive).
