    Hello,

We just recently switched to cable internet and I bought the Netgear router for use with my laptop. We also have a desktop that I have since set back to factory settings and I cannot get the desktop to find the new connection. This PC is an HP Pavillion A705W and it is running Windows XP Home Edition. When we used this computer with DSL it worked fine. We had an antenna installed in the back of it so it could be used with our previous wireless. Any suggestions on how to get this desktop to find the new wireless connection?

    Thank you.

I found a CD from the wireless antenna. It is a Linksys Wireless B PCI Adaptor. I did the setup wizard for it but the little icon at the bottom after installed said it's not running. Any suggestions anyone?

Sorry for all of the posts but i must let you know that the router is Netgear and the PCI adaptor is linksys. Do i need to take the whole desktop into the room where the router is and install either the Netgear Router CD or the Liinksys router CD?

I have a Netgear router and simply installed the software in the desktop with the cd then inserted the card in the laptop. Type 192.168.1.1 and enter 'admin' and 'password'. 'You can change the password later. That allows you to use the wizard to set your router up. Use WPA 2 and a good passphrase then look to the left for password and set that up. The password is what you use to logon to the router and the passphrase is what allows you to make changes to the router(and the same to the pci card).Don't forget to click apply when making changes.
On your lap top, find the conection that matches your ssid or the highest %and enter the passphrase it asks for which corresponds with your router. If it is stubborn, unplug and replug the PCI card.
That should do it. Try a reboot if there is still no connectivity.
There is also a Netgear forum and a netgear site in which to submit questions.
    Post back.

Thanks for the reply. I think I did put the Netgear CD in and it wouldn't configure since it wasn't hooked up to the router. it said it couldn't read it. Would i have to take the desktop to that room and hook it up first with it? That seems like a lot of work when i already have an antenna on the desktop and the laptop has a pc card. Thanks.

    >>Put the routercd in the desktop and follow the directions from the wizard.
Use WPA and a good passphrase that you write down. Also change the password from password to something you write down. When you want to log onto the router, you must type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar at top. The router will appear and the default user name is admin and the default password is password. Use those two to get in and make any changes you want.
Then put the card's cd in the laptop and follow directions. Insert the card when it tells you to. You will have to put the same passphrase in the card as you have in the router. Todo so click on the icon on the systray on the bottom and type the passphrase in the lapyop but be sure to do so where it says "do not show my characters as i type".
See here for further help at the netgear site. There is a place to ask questions and also a community forum to do the same. You have to register at both to ask questions.

Hi, I put the Netgear router CD in and it won't install what it has to. When I open the internet and try to put in 192.168.1. that will not work either.

    Go here http://kb.netgear.com/app/
Register at the forum and also at the main support page to ask your questions.
I would offer more help but told you all i know.
Maybe someone else will jump in.
Are you sure you have your router hooked up right - look on the bottom of the router and you will see a diagram. The modem cable goes in the internet port and the ethernet cable goes from LAN 1 to the pc. You also have to have the power cable plugged in. If you have done this try unplugging the router and modem for a few minutes then plugging them back in.
Plug the router in before you do the cd.

Do you see anything on your pc screen when you put the router cd in?

Thank you. Yep, my router is fine. I'm on a laptop right now connected to it. It's my other older laptop and desktop that cannot connect. Both were working with my previous internet connection. I switched from DSL to Cable recently. I thought the problem might be that my pc card in the older laptop and my antenna in my desktop weren't compatible with the netgear but I don't think that should matter. I did look around on the netgear forum and will post my questions.

One more question for you.... on my desktop computer I recently set the system back to factory settings. So I thought perhaps that's why the antenna isn't working. So installed my linksys cd that came with the antenna hoping that would do it. Didn't work.

If the router is set up and you install the cd in the desktop you should be able to access it.
Go to Linksysy for support just like you can for Netgear.
    Good luck
