Windows 10 1803 up to date and secure.
After a number of PC lock ups then running System File Checker twice, manual and via the recommended automatic programme, no problems were found in the logs.
Had an idea it was possibly a wired mouse problem as a click on the mouse coincided with the lock ups.

It happened again, sometime after the file checks, so I changed the mouse.

PC booted to the Windows screen with the whirlygig and went no further but it continued to rotate.

I switched off the mains power and restarted after a period.
I then got a sequence of screens indicating the following.....the displayed words are what I can remember!
    1. System scanning.
    2. Auto Repair.
    3. Diagnostics.
    4. Option...Go to Windows 10?....clicked 'Yes'.
    5. Setting up mouse.
    6. Report....E:\boot\resources\custom\bootres.dll....was damaged.
Windows then restarted normally and all seems well!?

I assume all really is well but would appreciate any comments or advice please?

It sounds rather like MS might have pushed a recent hardware driver 'update' to your PC; I think these should be logged in the Installed Windows Updates section but I'm not a W10 user so I can't give you a step by step guide. What I can say is that, if they have pushed a hardware driver update, about all you can easily do is either uninstall it, or use Task Manager to 'Rollback' that hardware driver to the last 'working' version; I'm not sure that there's any easy route left open by MS to block WU from updating hardware drivers any more, so you might remain at risk of having the same update pushed again.

Of course, at this point I'm only guessing, and further usage/reboots and log checking on your end might be needed to pinpoint what/where your current problem is/was.

Thankyou, I think the mouse installation was routine for the newly connected mouse. I can't find any recent driver updates but various reports, from Reliability History, indicate faulty files which I assume were corrected automatically.
Will report back if I have any more problems as things seem OK now.
