    Hey, I was at my friends house tonight. I reloaded his pc, got it running, did everything, sp2 etc... Worked fine for a while, now when we boot, it shows the xp screen with the blue bar, then as it when it is supposed to give the user log on screen, the pc just reboots! I did not try safemode yet, i got to tired. What can be the problem? I also ran XP recovory and fixed the MBR (i tried to load linux, and my cd was bad). I am stuck on what to do! Any help would be great. Also, there is no spyware or virus on the pc, it is a fresh install because I reformatted the hd.

    Thanks, Bryan

    Take the drive out and slave it to another drive, then run a virus scan on the drive. There could be a boot sector virus on the drive.

    Are you able to boot to 'Safe Mode'?

    I'm having a similar problem with my computer restarting during boot up. It does it just before the OS loads. I don't want to hijack this thread but I was wondering how I can boot into safe mode. F8 gives me a boot menu, but that just includes the drives I have.

    Thanks

    Reasons why a computer system reboots during startup (but not limited to) any one or more of the following:

    * a corrupt file on the hard drive
    * a corrupt Windows system file
    * a corrupt or incompatible hardware driver
    * a newly installed program
    * a Spyware or virus infection
    * a hardware error [bad ram, video card, etc]

    If you are unable to get to 'Safe Mode' and are not receiving any error messages, boot to the 'Recovery Console' from the CD or Startup disks and enter the following command:

    chkdsk c: /f

    This will check the file system on the drive and repair any errors.

    F8 is for boot menu, try DEL ESC F2 (any of them) for safe mode at the bios screen.

    F8 is also for the advanced startup options. The trick is, to hit F8 after POST is finished.

    Or what I have done is chosen my hard drive from the boot menu, then hit F8 afterwards.

    Thanks! No I have not booted into safemode yet. I am going to get the pc and work on it over the weekend. Will try all of that, may need to start looking at some of the hardware.
