Hello to you guys :major I have a problem because my PC keeps coming up with a blue error screen every time Windows starts up. The error code is: 0x0000007b, 0xf894d640, 0xc00000340, 0x00000000, 0x0000000.

I'm running Windows XP Pro but I don't have a disk. it came already installed on a 2nd hand PC.

The PC that I get the message on is an AMD Athlon 1ghz. I've recently tried an older HDD on it, but the exact same message comes up. I know there is nothing wrong with that drive because it's the one I'm using now on an older P2 pc. I've also took the RAM, graphics card and floppy drive out of the AMD pc and they all work, so they are not the problem. I've also swapped the ribbon (?) cables round too, but the same blue screen appears.

I am pretty sure the HDD that was in the AMD is busted because it doesn't work in the older pc either, but is there some reason why the other HDD doesn't work in the AMD? All the cables are connected properly and it's set in the BIOS and stuff.

P.S. It says I should run a virus check and run chkdsk /f etc, but how do I do that if Windows doesn't even start up??? :confused

Codes indicate a boot sector virus, according to Microsoft, but it could be a motherboard problem. I was going to suggested checking the BIOS, but seems you have done that, maybe check again. Can you get in via safe mode (F8) while booting? Possibly MBR or boot.ini?

Hello Daz, welcome to Major Geeks

A more complete quote from M$

This stop message indicates XP pro lost access to the system volume during startup. this error always occurs while the system is starting and is often caused by

    hardware problems

    corrupted or incompatible storage drivers
    file system problems

    bootsector viruses

    outdated firmware

During I/O system initialiusation this error can occur when

the controller or driver for the startup device failed to initialise the necessary hardware

file system initialisation failed because the system did not recognise the data on the boot device.

    Did the pc ever work?
Will it boot from a floppy, USB or CD now?

At what point in the boot does the blue screen stop error occur?

Thanks for replying :) It seems that there are many possible causes for the problem (way too many lol).

The message comes up just after the windows loading screen, right when windows normally would start up.

Safe mode, none of the modes work. I tried them all. I did try to boot from USB and network etc, but no luck.

The PC did use to work. But I switched it off at the switch because I was too lazy to turn it off normally and that's when the blue screen started.

I'm using the graphics card, ram, sound card from it in the pc I'm on now, so at least I know they aren't the problem.

I'm thinking it's either the mobo that's gone or because I don't have an XP installation disk, or boot disk? Because the exact same message come up when I try the HDD that I'm using right now.

Tomorrow I'm going to download a boot disk from the local library and try that. The cd drive doesn't work on this pc :hammer.

    thanks again for the help.

my guess is something got corrupted thanks to your lazyness by shutting it down properly..... so doing a repair on it MIGHT fix it, or maybe even a clean install..... but with how it started right after you did that my guess is definately something got corrupted....

Well I tried a quick-boot disk but it still didn't work. I think my only hope is to get an installation disk from somewhere and try that.
