Ok, my laptop slows down to a dead stop the CPU in task manager shown 2 windows for the CPU Usage History when I only have one CPU and they both get pegged to 100% for no reason and the fans start running and blowing hot air to cool the CPU, after about 30 sec. to a min. back to normal.

I don't have anything other than Firefox running and a few other stuff like zone alarm Windows Defender, here is what I got in the laptop and the Highjack This log. can some one help me with this?

I don't remember having 2 CPU Usage History windows in split screen before in task manager, could this be a indication of a CPU problem?

You're seeing two CPU Usage Windows because your Pentium 4 CPU has the HyperThreading (HT) feature, which creates a "virtual" CPU. The virtual CPU allows your system to offload some of the processor workload. You wouldn't see two windows if HT wasn't enabled in your BIOS, but there is no reason to disable it, because splitting the CPU chores is a very efficient way for your system to process data.

Windows XP SP2 makes good use of the HT feature, and it prevents any one process (CD-burning, for example) from loading down your system while you type an e-mail (as another example). Read this article for a basic explanation of how HT helps you:

    http://www.digital-air.co.uk/2005/07/intel-hyper-threading.html

Bottom line is, HyperThreading is a BENEFIT, and those two CPU Usage History windows are your proof that it is working on your system.

    About your HijackThis logfile...

There is one entry which needs to be addressed:

    O1 - Hosts: HP79409F HP0017A479409F

As a general rule, the letters "HP" make me think of "Hewlett-Packard", but I have no idea what that entry in your Hosts file indicates. My guess is that it is simply garbage, but you should post your HJT log in the Malware section here, so someone else can advise you further. I'm sure it is nothing to worry about, but a clean Hosts file is a happy Hosts file...

You have a lot of JUNK running on your system; for example, I doubt you need that Adobe garbage, or the Macromedia Licensing Service... I'd ask for advice on how to clean that up. Stripping out the needless junque will allow your system to perform better, and you might even notice faster boot times as a result...

Good luck; hope this all turns out well for you...

Thanks malware killer for explaining the CPU HT feature and the informative link, and I'm will post my HJT log in the Malware section as you suggested to see if I can get some advise on how to clean it up.

Thanks again for your help with this.
