As the title suggests, the monitor of a mate's PC won't come on at boot up. She is looking to upgrade to 4GB so she removed her memory card to get the speed from it. When she replaced the memory card, the monitor light came on amber, displayed the message 'RGB No input signal' went back to amber and stayed there. All leads are in correctly. All I can think of is the graphics card or a dodgy memory card. But it was working fine before she removed the memory card. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Check the cables inside your machine , unplug and plug the ram memory again and read this article !! :wave

    Hello fellow N'Eastener (gateshead west),

I take it that this is a result in her removing her RAM, are you working on her tower for her or are you just enquiring to pass on a fix for her ??, I will work on the presumption that you are working on it for her ok ;).

You need to go back into the case, being very carefull and making sure there is no power to the tower (poet n didn't know it :-D) i.e.. remove kettle plug, press and hold down the power button for at least 30 sec's, make sure you ground yourself(touch a tap or radiator) as static shock will kill your board or devices on it :cry. Remove the Ram and Graphics card (if it is a pci card), clean out the case with some compressed air (can be bought from any decent hardware store) pay particular attention to the heatsink fan and psu, use a cocktail stick or something similar to stop the fans from spinning whilst cleaning, this is important as the bearings will break if let to spin!!, give the GPU and Ram slots a good blast to clean out any gunk, clean the gold contacts on both the Ram and Graphics card (if the Graphic card has a cooling fan onboard clean that the same way as the heatsink and psu), use an eraser or an alcohol wipe to clean the contacts, re-seat the graphics card and ram carefully but firmly until you hear them click in place. Boot the machine and see if the issue still persists.

Thanks for the responses, people. Yeah, was working on it for her. I first did as Falconattack suggested and checked for loose cables and bent pins. Couldn't see anything amiss, so removed and replaced the memory card. Still nowt.
I removed the memory and graphic cards and cleaned them up as directed. Jesus, it was dirtier than a Sunderland council house in there. The inside of her machine has never seen the light of day.
That was maybe the problem, cos it came back from the dead.
I've left her instructions on a basic cleaning regime. I've ordered her RAM upgrade kit to install next week. Thanks for the help, Falcon and Iain.

Sheeeeeyit. She rang me today after work and told me she shut her machine down. When she turned back on, same thing. Back to square one. Anyone ever heard of this happening? Jeez. If I can't sort it, she'll have to go pro. That's professional, not prostitution rolleyes
Anyway, I'll try another clean up and see what happens. Tomorrow. I'm beat. Working weekends sucks balls.

Try it with another graph card in, if there is a spare one lying around !! or put yours in as a test, it could also be her psu going on the blink, not pushing enough power out, also try up dating the graphics card drivers, use only the ones from the oem's site.. i.e.. dell/hp/toshiba etc... or if it is custom built use the cards makers site AMD/ATI ..etc.

I'm sure there is. In Sutherland. Try finding one in Fulwell, though. Or Hendon. Like rocking horse shite I tell ya.

I'll try a replacement graphics card. I'm sure she said she had a spare but had to find it. Typical woman.....no organization.
After that, I don't know. Might it be the memory card itself?
If it is her PSU, I'll replace it for her. I'll take it in and get it tested.
    Thanks.

Okay. Ordered and installed 4 GB of RAM into her machine. Never bothered with the check up. But it's now running okay. Monitor came back to life. Hooray.
She then phoned me and said that her PC keeps displaying the message, 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'. She refreshes and it comes up, but sometimes does the same thing repeatedly. I asked if she was running anything else on the same broadband and she told me her kids are using X Box Live at the same time. Would this cause an issue? Don't know how it runs with X Box Live disconnected. Should have asked, but she was off to work at the time. Any help welcome.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet driver, does she leave her router on all of the time ?? a simple turn off/on of her router could resolve it, you could also try flushing the dns. The Xbox will have no barings on the connection issue. In her internet options> connections > check to see that the settings are correct i.e.. never dial a connection. > Lan > auto detect.

If you are still having prob's post back and we will run through a few tests ;)

Been over today to see if there's anything untoward. It booted up as normal and seems to be working just fine.......:confused
I'm sure she is just testing my patience.

Yeah, right. She's never in when I go round. She works full time and I'm on permanent backshift. For now. Purely platonic, I assure you.
Anyway, her son and daughter verify the bother she had with it. Maybe the 'have you tried turning it off and turning it back on?' approach was the answer.......High tech solution, eh? :major
