PC not booting due to corrupt "restore" program

WinXP Pro SP2 or SP3 - this PC has Farstone Restore IT installed which is similar to GoBack. The RestoreIT has become corrupt and the PC will not boot. It goes through the open sequence of the RestoreIT windows, one of which says "Press Space Bar to enter RestoreIT" and there's a progress indicator. Pressing the space bar or anything else does nothing and once the progress bar gets to 100%, the PC reboots. I checked the boot.ini file and it is normal (no erroneous Farstone entries), and I replaced the ntldr and the NTDETECT.COM files with healthy copies from a healthy WinXP system, and that made no change either. So, I'm assuming I need to re-write the master boot record or something similar. Will using fixboot and/or fixmbr via the Recovery Console do the job? Any input will be GREATLY appreciated!

 

Agreed - and, if they don't do it, you've always got the debug routines.

 

I know everyone was unable to sleep, tossing and turning, wondering how this turned out . . . .

. . . . I booted to the Recovery Console and ran both fixboot and fixmbr and this fixed the problem. I did 'em both at the same time so I don't know which one actually was responsible for the "fix", but all is well. You may now sleep normally again.
