    Hello
I was just reading that the most commonly asked question is, "Should I turn my pc off when done?"

The response I read is that you should trun it off if you are going to be off for an hour.
My wife and I are always using the pcs during the day and with this new school of thought, are confused as to what to do.
We leave them sleeping when not in use, but only turn off at night.
What do you think is the most prudent way of doing this?
    Thank you

Will not harm them in witch ever way you chose to use them to turn on or off or in stand bye or hibernate it will not harm your computer infact it might make it last longer if you turn it off when you are not using them. But most people like me leave there's running 24/7 only time mine is off is when power goes out lol.

    >>We use them intermittently during the day so it makes sense to leave them on then turn them off when going to bed.
I think it would be harmful to keep powering up several times a day.

    I've owned 14 computers.
I've replaced two power supplies: one from my computer which was powered on and off and another from an inherited friend's computer that he kept running. That makes it as clear as mud. Lots more goes into it like the manufacturer of the computer. Some manufacturers to cut costs put in close to an inadequate power supply. I think those would be more susceptible to the supply dying especially if things requiring additional power were added to the computer.

My computer which was powered on and off during the day had the power supply die right after I added additional RAM. Maybe that pushed it to the breaking point because it was barely adequate.

    Here's a question.

How much power does a typical computer use per hour, or a high performance computer, or a home-built computer?

Perhaps this can affect a persons decision whether to leave it on or shut off.

A lot of variables here granted. Just a ballpark range of power consumption.

    Thanks.

Thats not the amount of power you draw from the wall, thats all the internal power on each output from the power supply, to truly test you would need to meter at either the outlet, or the power cord going into the pc.

    >.From what we have read, and are thankful for, we have decided to turn the monitor off after 5 minutes sleep after 10 minutes. This way we can use the pcs the ten times a day or so and let it "rest" while sleeping in between uses and at night.

Well this is the way i have mine set up

if i am gone for 30mins

I have the monitors turn off at 20mins

And then i set my System Standby to 25mins

And left my Hard disk alone so all you have to do is press a button on the key board and it will boot off stand by mode.
