PC Performance Slow

Hey i have been told the best place to post this is here.

I am having trouble with my PC running really slow and crashing sometimes, i have done many things to trt and eradicate the problem but it is still slow.

I have searched for viruses and spyware even turned the sys restore off and made all folders viewable whilst scanning, after that i deleted anything that it found.

I have deleted most of the programs i have on the Hard Drive like games and crappy Software. I think that my system registry could be messed up but i dont know how to clean it. i have also de fraged the H/D.

Whilst my PC is running slow sometime when the PC has been turned off, it is slow to shutdown, and once you try and turn it back on it says system boot disk needed, i noticed when it went through the BIOS it got stuck on the CD/DVD drives, so i removed them and the PC booted up.
Thats not the stranges part when i put the drives back in it worked perfectly, now however the CD/DVD Drives are not registering in mycomputer.

Oh yeah when my PC is running really slow The disk optimisation on norton sys doc is really high, CPU usage ranges from 11% to 95%.

And i have enough space on my H/D

Please follow these instructions to tweak your system for performance. This covers just about every software tweak, so if after this you are not satisfied, consider a hardware upgrade (prioritizing RAM and CPU), or at least following the instructions in the Overclocking Guide.

 

Sorry, I just re-read your post, and I realized I gave the wrong advice in my last post. This sounds more like your IDE controller may be going, but I haven't got a very solid method for troubleshooting that, I'm afraid. Can you try the CD drives in another computer? If so, do they work reliably? How about the hard drive?

 

Hey the hard drive has always run ok just a little slow from time to time. i have 2 Drives one DVD rom and one DVD/CD re-writer, the re-writer has always worked correctly and has started playing up in the last few weeks i have just put it back in and it is working again. The DVD drive i had to take out a while ago cause it was not letting the PC go through BIOS then i decided to try it again and it works, i will try and keep an eye to see if it is the IDE.

I have run the cleaner it turns out i weren't using it properly, i did not know bout the tools and issues sections yeah i know i am a dumb ass. My PC does seem to be running a little more smoothly since i have cleaned it, it had over 333 issues to get rid of so heres hoping it runs smoothly for a while

Oh good! I'm glad things are a bit better for you. If you find that the system continues to run slowly (after you have followed those instructions), or that the drives are intermittently not detected, then we may need to move on to troubleshooting the IDE controller.

Hey how does one go about trouble shooting the IDE drives.

I have put the drives back in but the comp is not picking them up, i am trying to re install the drivers as i speak

 

What OS?

My best recommendation would be to try the drives that aren't being detected in another computer. If they are consistently detected, then you know the drives are good. Then you would have a good idea where the problem lies...
