    Hi,

I have a 3rd hand PC at home not sure of the specs, i was using it last night until about 9pm and I powered it off but at about 12.15 am it booted up by itself  Anyone have any ideas how this could happen? Or anyone experienced the same problem.

    Thanks In advance,

    Cheese

    Wow, that's pretty amazing...
Do you have any type of network set up?

My computer use to do the same thing. I narrowed it down to one thing...my modem...it mustve been a piece of sh*t because if it was plugged into a phoneline and i shut down it would turn right back on. Eventually I got really annoyed and replaced it with a better one. Unfortunately I still have to use a modem. I'm not saying this is your problem but it could just be a defect in a piece of hardware you have. Usually happens in NICs or Modems they get a signal and it wakes up the computer. Hope this helps. G'luck

I agree with one of the previous posts, I think it probably has something to do with a piece of hardware such as a modem or something. Infact my computer was doing the same thing not too long ago when I connected a phone-line to do faxing, etc.... I contacted tech support over the issue and they said that it also could have been feed power in the motherboard causing it to do that. Feed power, the way I understand it, is when there is enough power left in the motherboard after you shut the computer down to make it turn back on at any random time. I would check your modem, you might be able to change these settings in the BIOS for automatic power-up. I would also do some research with feed power.

P.S. I don't know if the feed power thing is even real. I was talking to some foreign tech support people reading of their screen. You know how that goes.

Have you checked the system's BIOS to make sure that features like "wake on LAN", "wake on modem" or other power-up options have been disabled? My motherboard has all that stuff in a section of the BIOS setup screen named "Power".

What motherboard and BIOS does your machine have? It may tell you with a splash screen that appears right after you switch on the power.

Do you actually mean "power off" (close off the power), or "power down" (leaving the PC, more or less, in snooze mode, or neutral), but wth the power to the PC on?

Do you leave it connected to the net by modem when you "power off"? Or do you physically disconnect the modem from the phone line? Just trying to eliminate some possible causes. Bazza

I had that problem, but solved it by simply shutting off the power supply after the computer is shut down.

Pulling the power cord out of the outlet, or shutting off the power supply will stop the problem, but it won't "solve" the problem, if you see what I am getting at. The problem is why did it reboot for no apparent reason? Bazza
