    Hello

Working on a friends computer, no name - home made running Windows7 and
    8GB of ram.

It's running incredibly slow. Anything is slow - bouts, opening IE, control panel - you name it its SLOW!!!!!!!!

I ran malwarebytes (which I've always had good luck with). It initially found only 8 intrusions. Ran again, clean. Yet its still running SLOW

I'm wondering if this is a HW problem. Downloaded memtest86 to a thumb drive but couldn't get the pc to recognize the thumb drive on bouts.

    Even safe mode is slow

I checked windows update. He had never done that. I'm shocked there were only a small amount of updates, which i'm downloading/installing now.

    So any thoughts/suggestions???

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure if you want me to post anything or not (ie output of specy).

I will say CCleaner found alot of CRAP which I removed.

I wasn't sure what to do with the windows defender stuff. It was in the same sentence as CCleaner, so was I supposed to find it there or download it elsewhere

I will re-run the windows updates.

I'm just not finding any smoking guns on this. This system takes forever to boot. Simply things just take forever.

Again any thoughts help suggestions very much appreciated

Take a screenshot of CCleaner > Tools > Startup (suggested by JoeRay12) and post it.

Thanks for naming all of them!

Windows: This is the important one and it looks good. CCleaner Monitoring can be turned off. But, do it in CCleaner > Options > Monitoring.

Scheduled Tasks: You'll have to open Task Scheduler and check when each task runs. Example: CCleanerSkipUAC will only run when the program is opened. It skips the UAC warning. There are four Driver Support-RTM tasks. If they are needed, ensure they are not set to run at logon. There's also the Optimizer Pro Schedule task - I have no idea what this does as I stay clear of any optimizers. Used incorrectly they can cause problems. Lastly, the UninstallManager, not sure about this as it's a Microsoft program (which I don't have) but, I don't believe an uninstaller should run at startup.

IE: Only the two avast! Online Security add-ons are present. While I do use avast!, the avast! Online Security is disabled.

Firefox & Chrome: Both have numerous plugins enabled. Only the user can decide which are needed everytime the browser is opened. FYI I haven't had Java for more than a year.

Context Menu: Those three avast! entries will have no effect on the PC's performance.

Overall it looks good but, have a look at those Scheduled Tasks. After that, we'll look at Services.

PS Ensure Scheduled Defragmentation is turned on.

OptProLauncher.exe and BlockAndSurf.exe I would consider to be malware or adware, there could easily be more such crap installed, esp. in your browsers.

I would look for help from here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 study and follow it carefully, once the malware team have given you the all clear, you can return here if you still have issues with soft/hardware.

    Thanks everyone...

I will take a look at all these.

FYI... reference avast: He seems to have multiple antivirus's on there. The one that is on there now (super anti spy where) he claims is legit but is open to removing it. The other was avast. I never heard of that, so I tried to remove via add/remove programs but wouldn't let me. I discovered it (like norton) needs a special removal tool, which i downloaded and ran. Seems like there are still bits of it remaining.

Much appreciated... Will post results. Not sure how much I will get done today, memorial day, but will try. He is in no rush to get this back.

I was looking at those mentioned programs to remove. Instructions say to use add/remove programs. However, in control panel add/remove, none are there

    I will keep plugging away

CClean registry cleanup found ALOT of crap... fixed/removed it

There is one windows update that WONT accept. I get some error I can't recall.

I want to try another reboot see how long that takes now.

Is there anything (now that I have cleaned up) you guys want me to run and re-post to see how it looks?

Make sure SP1 is installed. If it isn't, you will not be offered updates because support for 7 without SP1 ended April 9, 2013.

It seems to be running better once booted up

However, boot ups are taking forever still. I also get (not all the times) a chkdsk come up on bootup

Tried to run chkdsk /f locally but won't let me

    Got the chkdsk to run

Now just the boot up and shut downs taking forever

    ODD

When you say goto an expert, do you mean here - i.e.. another part of the forum.

I posted HW when I couldn't detect malware via malwarebytes.

I could repost on the SW or similar forum here I guess

Thanks sooo much for all your help

    DeputyDawgAtl...

Just looking over the startups on the PC, and I Googled this one in particular that isn't signed:

    fst_us_178.exe

I found the following listing it as adware:

    http://www.herdprotect.com/upfst_us_178.exe-6fe4d94a441f6a9071975a35ef43e262f9fab7f5.aspx

Also there is a process called BlockandSurf.exe, which is also apparently classified as adware. Here is some video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n-2NUAXA2c

If you haven't run adwcleaner, maybe it would be a good idea at this point. You could also try turning off those two processes using CCleaner's startups tab, so that they won't start on boot.

    Link for adwcleaner:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/adwcleaner.html

The video has some helpful info on how to handle BlockandSurf.exe, and a Google search could help if you require more.

Link to virus total to check the files to see if they are malware related:
