last night I went to power up my computer, and i couldn't get it to post. I started removing peripherals and rebooting to see if I could locate and issue with the video card or some other part.
one thing right away I thought was weird my keyboard and mouse (Coolermaster LEDs) would light up even with the pc off, but plugged in, with both usbs plugged in through the motherboard (Gigabyte GA z-97x gaming 5) in the back. So I was wondering if it was a power supply issue. then I switched the keyboard and mouse to my front panel which is an aftermarket rosewill usb port/card reader, and they were off until I pressed the power button on the case (Antec 900-2).

I eventually got it to post somehow. I have windows 7, and it would boot normally until I got to the windows logo where the four colors swirl, and then it would shut down, then start all over again. it will do this continually as long as i let it.

trying to use windows system restore does not work. I tried using windows startup repair, and it says that it cant repair it. It gives me error #0x800700b7

I have another rig, so I took the c: drive out and plugged it in to the backup rig, and it appears in windows explorer as d: in the backup rig. apparently now the drive label for that drive say "system reserved", and now all my operating system files and programs are set on another partition (F: on my backup )

looking at what is left on the main partition, it seems the "System volume information" folder was re-written, because it shows a date modified of 12/17.

Virus? Burp? hiccup? how do I go about fixing it if i cant get it to boot? win7 disc?

Did you try Startup Repair from the Windows 7 disk?

    A restore point was created.
All the files & folders for the restore points are in System Volume Information folder.

I think you will need a Win7 disc to properly start up.

doing it right now, I put the disc in and it wants to do a clean install. I click next, and then select "repair your computer". I have 2 options.

Use recovery tools - select operating system, but there isnt one listed in the box below, so it wants me to load drivers. then next dialogue box says "insert the installationmedia for the device and click OK to select the driver. when I click ok I get another box to pick which drive...there are...

    System Reserved C:
Local Disk D: (My storage drive)
Local Disk E: Which is probably where my os and program files went
    Boot X:
    CD Drive f:
    Removable Disk G, H I , and J (Rosewill USB card reader)

    which should I select?

You can try that....hopefully it will start up. After you save your important files, then you might consider doing a clean install.

My other choice was to restore your computer using a system image, but I am not sure where I would find that given the drive letters have changed

If you never created one, you won't find it.

where did that boot x: come from? never saw that before. If I select E it wants a setup information type of file. what file am I looking for...INF? or a cab file?

all my critical files i need are on the storage drive. If I do a clean install, will it get rid of that extra partition that was put there along with the boot x:?

its a crap shoot because sometimes I get to where I can install or repair, other times I get a message saying "This version of Sysytem recovery is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows" I am using the same disc i originally installed with

Copy your important files using the backup PC and do a clean install.

without being able to get it to boot I lost whatever was on my desktop, and emails as well. does anyone have an idea as to what caused this? I'd like to prevent it in the future.

You simply hook up the hard drive itself to another working system, save the files, then go back to a reinstall. You haven't lost anything yet.

did a reinstall, started loading programs into it. went to put into hibernate last night. tried to boot it back up today, and it wont boot again and it shows a new entry in the bios boot list referencing the system startup with the hbernate data. i cant get past it because it cannot find an installation of windows to repair. upon doing windows startup repair under diagnosis and repair details it says...

    root cause found
the partition does not have a valid system partition
    repair action partition table repair

it has windows boot manager as the primary boot sequence

i try to get it to boot to the main drive c: and i get a message before windows begins loading that says..."Reboot and select proper device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. this puts me in a loop because the only other boot media is the disk and I cant get to windows repair because it cant find the os on the c: drive

is there something I can type in a command prompt to get rid of that entry in the boot sequence that says windows boot manager?

Have you tried attaching the drive to an alternate SATA port?

Mekanic...actually yes, I put the disk in another rig, an update...

in the process of doing a format and fresh install of win 7 on my main drive...
my storage drive is now missing its partition. My backup rig is an xp machine. plugged my storage drive in to it and it shows in the bios but not in windows explorer. After reading my options online I went with EaseUS, but it's got me going into a continuous loop. The Partition master pro edition reads the disk as GPT with no other info under the heading of file system, capacity, status, etc. Supposedly the software will do a partition recovery but it can't. then a box comes up with a link to another program, and it tells me to use partition recovery 8.5. But that program does not work of GPT disks. So I guess I am relegated to data recovery only, I won't be able to save the drive solely by recovering the partition. unless someone has another idea of what to do.
