PC Reboots randomly

I have had this on two computers in a row, both bought through Comp USA. The first was an HP that wasa configured to my specs and sent to me. This PC shut down randomly and without warning. It did not matter if I was gaming, surfing, doing work, or reading it just shut down.

After a long fight with Comp USA and HP they finally took it back.

Thing is now that I have a Gateway system that was configured to my specs (CTO) it is doing the same thin also bought through Comp USA.

I have looked at the error logs, and reviewed the documentation many times and I am lost. Since I am getting "stop error" messages on both machines it makes me think it is something I am installing.

I am not sure though, is it possible it is temperature since I am having them beef up these basic systems? Power supply? I mean having two differen't machines with the same issues makes it seem like it is something I am doing.

How can I troubleshoot this? I do not even know if it is hardware or software to be honest. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Some background info...

Windows XP Media Center Edition, both boxes were Intel, this current one is core 2.

I ran EventVwr.msc and there are tons of errors in there under both application, and system.

An example of the messages are :

I am lost and really appreciate any help you might be able to offer.

Should I move this to the Hardware forum?

Okay, first question I have. You say stop errors? Are ye getting BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)? If so, what is the error?

Any error codes within the service manager?

theefool I think I understand what you mean. I went and pulled up the services tab through the control panel and I did not see any errors listed. Is that what you were asking?

I just ran Everest to see what was being reported...

    Field Value
    Sensor Properties
    Sensor Type HDD
    GPU Sensor Type Driver (NV-DRV)

    Temperatures
    GPU 75 °C (167 °F)
    WDC WD3200JS-22PDB0 41 °C (106 °F)

Is it me or are those temps high?

No no blue screens at all. It is just the error message that is being generated by Microsoft. You know it is kind of generic, and there after the system reboots itself.

On the old PC I uninstalled everything. Reinstalled drivers, and everything else I could think of. At this point I am starting to go crazy. 0-5 reboots a day is atad much even for the most patient people.

The error message is something like...

Just a quick update, it is cooler in my "office" this morning and the computer seems cooler as well.

Does anyone know if these temperatures are high? I have looked around for base line numbers but I came up blank.

Again any help is always appreciated. I am afraid if the temps are high and I keep running the thing I am going to cause serious damage. I do have a call into CompUSA but they have yet to call me back. Yet again.

    Temperatures
    GPU 70 °C (158 °F)
    WDC WD3200JS-22PDB0 36 °C (97 °F)

Pushing the limits of the cpu temps ...check inside that the fans are spinning properly and that nothing is blocking the vents (surely there are no dust bunnies ).

I would be afraid if it was loaded with dust bunn ies so early, I mean it is only like8 days out of the store :)

I checked to be sure , it is crowded in there but no dust bunnies. Should I demand a better fan from CompUSA?

Also should I be afraid to use it at this point?

Also would high temps cause it to reboot itself?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

8 days old? I would consider talking to the store about it ...in the mean time ..right click my computer / properties / advanced and under start up and recovery...unheck the box to restart on errors....then when it crashes to a BSOD write down the exact error code with the file ....post it.

Okay Tim sounds great I called CompUSA to complain and told them I would be taking it back to them.
