I'm a little confused regarding the use of a router for security purposes. Are they just for a network of computers or do they also provide security for an individual desktop pc that is used in conjunction with a firewall? (WIN98.)

I don't know much about routers so I can't answer your question as to which one. I guess you're saying that you don't need a router for an individual pc; just a bi-directional fire wall for security purposes. Is that correct?

Basically yes ....pc would plug directly into a dsl/cable modem ....a router would allow multiple computers to access the single modem ....the router does provide some measure of hardware security, but the software firewall will provide a lot more.:) :)
