    Hey Everyone,

I recently upgraded my system and it seems that whenever I run a game or a benchmark test my computer will completely shutoff, like immediate power down. There isnt a BSOD or anything like that it just powers off then after about a second it comes back on. It runs fine when it is doing normal work it just seems to happen whenever I run a game that accesses my GPUs. I have looked around on the internet and havent found anything to help so far. I guess it could be the PSU but I am not sure and I really dont want to go buy a new one before I am sure that is the problem.

This is what I have in my computer:
    ASUS P6T Deluxe
    1 Kilowatt OEM ATX PSU
    24 GB G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz
    2 x Radeon HD 4870 x2 in crossfire mode so 4 GPUs

If anybody has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like heat. Check your fans first. Your CPU and graphic card go into heavy heat mode under benchmarking and games and that card in Crossfire twice as much. Find a monitoring tool for your motherboard. My money is on heat.

Reseat your ram, you never know.

I am with MA. Heat or maybe a weak PSU.

Welcome to Major Geeks Justgo. :cool

    I agree on the heat.

Also as MA suggested, this card has always been well known for getting pretty toasty, I'm assuming the "2 x " means you have them x-fired, which will bring about much more heat.

    Install this ...

It has a very accurate temp monitor, make a note of CPU and GPU temps on desktop idle and then fire up a game or the benchmark if you so wish, then minimize and record temps again after a few minutes.

Edit: Nice rig by the way, same RAM I have except I only have 8GB

Alright so I installed the app and this is what I got back.

    Operating System
    MS Windows 7 64-bit SP1
    CPU
    Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz 58 °C
    Bloomfield 45nm Technology
    RAM
    24.0 GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 801MHz (9-9-9-24)
    Motherboard
    ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6T DELUXE (LGA1366) 49 °C
    Graphics
    SHARP HDMI (1920x1080@60Hz)
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (ATI) 54 °C
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (ATI) 44 °C
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (ATI) 42 °C
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (ATI) 36 °C
    CrossFire Enabled

Also an update I finally got a game to actually open up and my machine not shutdown. I got Dragon Age 2 to open in window mode and it seems to be running fine, but when I tell it to go to full screen my machine turns off any ideas?

Well that's interesting, I'm leaning away from heat now since the likelihood of temps getting that high , that quickly is unlikely.
    So a couple of thoughts.

1st. Check and re-check that your GPU drivers are correct and up to date, also your Direct X.
2nd. Possibly an issue with the x-fire setup, I know many problems have occurred with x-fire.
So to diagnose this you will need to disable x-fire and test each card independently.
I am aware that you can test them while both in PC but personally I would be more inclined to remove both and insert each one and test just with one card.
If problem persists with only one card then chances are that card is faulty, but that's unlikely. You are more likely to find that everything works fine with both cards, just not when they are together. But that's a bridge we cross if/when we come to it.

3rd.. It is possible your PSU is struggling, the switching from windowed to full screen could suggest the extra power consumption is cutting the PSU out.

One thing I would like to ask, you said you "Upgraded", does this mean you built a new machine or you added more powerful parts?
If it's the latter could you list which parts you know to be working fine before the upgrade.

    Update:

I found the problem. My PSU only handles 18A on a rail even though it is a 1KW. I can thank alienware for that piece of junk. My 4870 X2 use up 24 amps when they are in use...so my first card was hooked up to two different rails which allowed to it run, it also runs fine when they aren't being used due to the fact they only consume about half the load when not it use. So my 18A rails just wont cut it when it they are actually trying to draw full power from the PSU. I will upgrade my PSU to a better one and that should fix the problem.

    Thanks everyone.

Let us know what PSU you get, and how it works out for you.

Ah, once again the "Pre-Build" big numbers strike again, many people don't know that the wattage isn't near as important as companies make out.
Although I'm surprised on a 1000w you only have a single 12v rail at 18A, thats pretty low, what on earth were they thinking?

Good luck getting the new PSU, pick one and post it and we can give our opinions if you'd like :)

Edit: This is the PSU I have although I have the 800w version with a single 12v rail with 66A. Had it now for about 4-5 months and it's not even had a hiccup.
