pc slow, sound jumps

my pc is very slow and my sound is jumping
i defragged (1st time in 4yrs) and it improved the sound, however sound is jumping again after a week

i am assumig i need more memory

win xp 40gb 256 apparently i have 57% free disk space
my paging file virtual memory is always too low and increasing itself

what should i do

have u tried updating ur drivers?but it might be ur ram,if that doesnt work i would call a pc shop act like ur gonna give them ur business and ask them what the problem is.

256M is marginal for XP. You might try a fixed-size swapfile, but your best bet is to add memory.

 

You definitely need more memory. I'd say atleast 1GB, but more if you're using it for games. What is your CPU speed?

 

speed? not sure but i know i have amd athlon 2100+/1.73ghz.....is that what you mean?

im not a gamer though i do spend loads of time on the internet when i can. i have a broadband connection cable broadband

 

I would recommend downloading this, http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html , and either of these two, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware_SE_Personal_d506.html , or , http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_Tools_d2471.html , and run the first one and either of the last two and see if there is a difference!

 

ok i already have adaware do weekly checks most times
i ran the ccleaner ... a little difference but still room for improvement still jumpy but it did clear like 3k worth of temp files etc
guess i will have to get more ram
