So I've got a nice homebuilt gaming rig now... but still am using some freebe speakers. I have some Christmas money to spend, and am looking to buy a home theatre system. Now from what i understand, in order to hook this up to my pc and get full surround sound, i need a sound card with a digital out or a coaxial out, correct?

    Thanks,
    Gimp

It depends what you want to do. If you want to run an external amp with speakers from that then you're need a coaxial or optical out to run to the amp.
If you just want standard surround then you could get a 5.1 or 7.1 card and run a standard set of 5.1 or 7.1 speakers like I'm doing at the moment (although I will be going to an amp with better speakers eventually).

I want to run my pc through an existing home theatre system. So I assume i have to buy a soundcard/ system with coaxial or optical ports.

In that case, yeh you'll need coaxial or optical/digital out.
