Yes, the computer has a network card, and can connect to an ethernet router. (It actually comes with a broadband internet starter kit)

Yes, ethernet is fairly standardized nowadays. I wouldn't worry about it!

For further information on your router (including user manual, and links to firmware upgrades), please see this link.

O, before you see that i hav wrote this and fink OMG hes annoying! please just read lol.

I think this is correct but just confirm for me, that router when properly connected to 2 computers, will allow me 2 share all files yes?

And if i have iTunes on 1 computer with lots of songs, will i be able to get all those songs on the other pc? Or will i hav 2 upload them all again?

  11. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

You will be able to if you 'share' the folders

Having the root of drives (IE all files) shared is a security risk. just share what you need. (Sharing is simple, we'll come to that once you get the computer)

ok, so i will be able to get all the songs on my new pc without uploading them all

    Anon-125cdb8a9b Anonymized

ok, so none of these really are actually to do with pc's....

So i suppose experience is the only way to learn...

  25. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

Experience is good, but if you get the option to choose to do IT for gcse or A-level then go for it. I didn't have this option when I went to school.

when i look at pc specs on websites, how do i know if it has spare slots so that i can add to the RAM or graphics?

  32. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

Well depends on the graphics card. Some are require an 'AGP' slot, although most new ones now are PCIex.

Normally the spec will tell you the maxiumum amount of ram you can have.

Things like network cards require a spare PCI slot

  34. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

It means you have 4 slots. Ram modules come in different sizes The most common are 512mb or 1gb

you could install 4 512mb sticks and have 2 gb or 4 1gb sticks and have 4 gb.

  35. Anon-125cdb8a9b

o and btw does the pc hav 4 memory DIMM 240-pin slots or 3 because of the 1 stick already in there?

  44. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

It has 4 slots in total. The 1gb is probably a 1gb module taking up one slot

  45. Anon-125cdb8a9b

    Anon-125cdb8a9b Anonymized

ok so looking at the numbers, if i buy this pc i can add 3 RAM sticks and 1 graphic or PCI card yes?

RAM slots will be referred to as memory or DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module)slots. A good board will have 4 at least.

Graphics cards are mostly PCI-Express nowadays. If you want an SLI (Scalable Link Interface) configuration, meaning you can use more than one video card as a single video card (giving alot of power for gamers), then make sure that the motherboard has at least two PCIe slots, and for peace of mind, look for the SLI logo.

Sorry, re-writing software? You mean CD burning software?

If so, windows XP has that built in, and most RW drives come with a bundled application suite like Nero or Roxio. So you should be covered. I don't see anything that indicates this on the link, so to play it safe, you may want to visit the Backup section of Majorgeek's download site. I'm sure you'll find freeware there that will meet your requirements.

yes i mean burning software, i would expect windows media to be on the pc already, should it be?
