I'll keep this simple, I have a NETGEAR CG814WG Wireless Modem provided to me by my ISP. I would like to know how I can pass files between my Desktop (Windows 7 64-bit, connected via lan cable) and my HP Mini (Windows XP 32-bit, wireless or lan). I presume it's a router too and I've taken a look around a few other tech forums but nothing has really been very helpful.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey, thanks for the links. I followed the steps for setting up a network, but it's the same problem. On my XP, "Workgroup is not accessible", on my 7, "Windows cannot access HP_NET". Could it be that my router isn't configured for this?

no, your router should be fine, it's just the finicky windows networking.

just make sure the workgroup name is the same for all computers on the network. and sometimes a reboot will fix the xp problem. also, i've found it easier to select a folder in xp, right-click it and choose sharing, and share this folder.

Hello. Still the same problem, tried a reset, checked the workgroup names (both are on SCHOOLWORK), and re-ran the network wizard on XP (and reset again). I think it's wierd that Windows 7 identifies that HP_NET exists, but when I double-click on it, it doesn't seem to connect to it. I've checked that sharing is turned on on both PC's. Could it be that my win 7 is 64-bit while my XP is only 32? I wouldn't have thought that woulda made a difference though.

i don't think so, but it might help to put a login password on the user account in xp, and you will be prompted for it when you try to access it from 7.

Well what about the problem of the Mini not being able to connect to the workgroup?

i assume that HP_NET is the name of the netbook? try opening an explorer window (like my computer) from the netbook, and in place of My Computer in the address bar, type:
\\ and the name of the computer running windows 7

I got it working. Found that my ZoneAlarm firewall was disabling access over a trusted network (no idea why, though). So I configured it and now it runs brilliantly. Thanks for the help.
