My ppc is very slow to boot, about 3 minutes. I'm runing windows Me, 1.2 gig processorm and 384 megs of pc133 sdram. I've tried disabling all but the needed startup items but it did not help. Any ideas. Thanks,

Try doing a defrag. but the simplest way to speed up the boot.. is to Format and reinstall.. its the only way to get rid of all the
stuff that you don't need :)

Nah, you dont need to format. He is Defragging wont hurt, but do a full disk scan to look for errors first. Are you sure you disabled all startup items?

More importantly, Windows ME is an older operating system and we need information to help you. If you want help we need as much info as you think might help. In this case, obviously, when did this start, was it always like this, etc.

I do a scan disk and defrag every other day. The install is only about 6 weeks old. This problem started about 2-3 weeks ago I think. I has never been this slow to boot. I've also ran adware and other utilities. There are no temp problems with the cpu, it stay's around 32-35 c. When booting up, I don't hear any hard drive activity for the first 60-90 seconds.

This could be a BIOS setting possibly, not sure how familiar you are with that, could check for a BIOS update.

Defragging and scanning your harddrive every day or two is too much. Many believe doing that contributes to a premature hard drive death simply by writing to the whole drive that often, needlessly. I suggest every 2 weeks at earliest.

Finally, you didnt mention network card. Intels cards are known to slow down boot. Either way, updating your network card drivers *may* help.

As for startup, did you do this through control panel? Sometimes there are other startup items, like in a win.ini or registry that might not show up in basic Windows startup display. Look in our Admin Tools section for tools that might show more, like:

Finally, I am not there, you could be running both your BIOS and Antivirus boot sector scanning and that could cause a slowdown, for example. Some startup programs simply might take longer then others and might not be needed.

    Good luck.

I use a Realtek network card and the bios has the latest update also. I will start the 2 week defrag ect. I'll check for a driver update on the network card as well. Thanks for the input. MG's is a great site.

I have checked all the drivers and I have all of the latest ones that are available. I am using a startup utility also. I have turned off the bios scan too. I have ran several different spy utilities and trojan scans and the thing still takes the same time to load. Anything else I could try? Thanks

I cant think of anything right now without seeing it, there is always a million possibilities including hardware starting to fail, corrupt registry and more.

I'm going to try the reg clean and see what happens. I am leaning to hardware failure myself. It's time to build a new on anyway. Thanks.

I found the problem. My zip drive was going out, removed it and solved problem. Thanks for all the replies, I tried everything that everyone suggested so I know my pc is in much better shape now. Thanks,
