This is a Dell PC and it will NOT connect to the internet no matter what I do. Here's what I've done so far (more or less in order from first things I tried to the most recent things I've tried) : malware removal (PC was basically clean) ; Dial-A-Fix; IE Fix; WinSock and TCP/IP repair; reloaded network drivers; tried 3 alternative browsers (Firefox, PhaseOut, Avant) ; tried 2 different network cards besides the on-board NIC; sfc /scannow; ipconfig release and renew numerous times; and lastly, a safe repair install of WinXP Home SP2 over the top of itself. Still no internet access. I know the router and modem are OK because I have other PC's going online w/o problems. I've swapped out the cat5 cables several times also. Any ideas? Should I reformat and reload? I was trying to avoid doing this due to the quantity of music and pictures I'd need to back up, but unless someone has a miracle cure and can provide something I haven't tried yet, a format/reload may be the way to go.

Can you access the router thru that PC?

Maybe you should post the ipconfig.

OK. Here's an attached .png screenshot of ipconfig /all from the PC in question. I rebooted right before the ipconfig so it would be "fresh" ;)

When I try to connect to the router, I get the error "Internet Explorer could not open the search page."

and you are typing in the 192.168.0.1?

Is this the same/similar setting on the ones that do connect (diff. IP's but the rest the same)?

Do you have ZoneAlarm installed ...or was it once installed?

So you can get an IP address Ok from the router.

So your problem is to do with the settings for IE.

    In IE
    Tools>internetoptions>connections

make sure the LAN settings fields are all blank
Make sure it is set to 'never dial a connection'

In the TCP/IP properties of the LAN
make sure that 'automatically detect settings' is not checked

Make sure the (? windows) firewall is set to pass IE

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! :D:D:D:D

The *#%@!%* PC had PC-Cillin running in the background and for some reason didn't have an icon in the system tray and it's not listed in the Start menu's All Programs list either. I started screwing around with the PC-Cillin settings and decided to turn off the real time protection. As soon as it was turned off, the web connectivity returned! Go figure!
Thanx for all your help guys! I'm just glad that I decided to keep messing with it, instead of giving up and formatting....
