    My PC wont boot up, when I took the side off the amber light on the motherboard was flasking, what does this mean. There's nothing coming up on screen no power to my cordless mouse, the fan is working on the motherboard.

    Normally just shutdown.But this particular time I left the PC on(long enough for it to go to stand-by).Came to use it 30mins later and the problem starts there.

    OK. In that case have you tried turning it off completely? And what I mean is disconnect it from the mains and then leave it for a minute or two before trying to power it up again.

    I just think your PC may have got itself stuck in a hibernate mode.

    Yeah it been unplugged for the last couple of nights.I keep trying it to no avail.

    OK then assuming you've got Windows XP - have you tried booting with a windows 98 bootdisk (floppy)? If not try it to see if it will boot to the W98 command prompt. Download from http://www,bootdisk.com if you've not got one handy.

    can`t do this as PC has no floppy drive and I can`t open the cd drawer to do it by disk.
    Sorry for the names again.I keep trying it but still the same?:)

    I know this may sound a little strange but its worth a try as it takes very little effort and costs nothing :) . Firstly leave the PC unplugged for an hour or two (overnight is fine) then plug it back in and turn on the power switch at the back of the PC but don't operate the power button at the front. Now just leave it like that again for a couple of hours or so - then try powering it up (and have your fingers crossed) :). it may just work for you as it has worked for me in the past.

    Sometimes it can just be unplugging power cord and holding in on/off switch for 20 - 30 seconds.
    If you want to open the cd drive ...paper clip in the tiny hole and push ...should open it.

    Holding in the switch for 20-30 seconds!! :eek: Sounds like hard work to me :rolleyes: :p

    If you are not getting power to the cd-rom to even open the drawer, that to me would indicate power supply or something unpluged. ed

    The same lead also powers this pc so can`t be that?

    I mean inside the pc, the cd-rom SHOULD have power if it is plugged into the power supply. ed

    All connections inside and out seem OK.
    Holding the power button down for longer=no effect:eek:
    Perhaps we could hold a Uri Geller type moment where we all think about my PC repairing itself.:)

    Depends. I had one of my PCs show exactly the same symptoms as Omeel/Chanman just this very morning after I had replaced a case fan ie the only sign of power was the LED on the mobo but I followed my own advice and left it unplugged for a while then plugged in but not turned on for about half an hour and then, hey presto, it works just fine. :)

    Still the same checked everything.
    motherboard=fan working,amber light and slight beep.
    LED=Flashing.
    Speakers=power.
    Webcam=power.(usb)
    Wireless mouse/keyboard thingymajig=no power (usb)
    Light on the button=flashing amber.
    I have left the power off overnight,taken the little battery out of motherboard,changed the hard drive and held the button in for as long as I care to remember and taken out the ram.
    Any other ideas?
    The CPU don`t know how to find out if it`s that.Or what is a CPU?

    Hmm OK In that case you will probably need to check the voltages coming out of the PSU. Do you have a voltmeter to do that?

  20. Omeel

    Omeel Private E-2

    Can`t be that.
    The PSU is supplying this PC ok?

  21. Yargwel

    Yargwel MajorGeek

    Not quite sure what you mean by that. :confused:

    The PSU in a PC supplies various voltages to different parts of the system. Just because one part is working fine doesn't mean they all are. :rolleyes:

    Sorry mate.
    I`m not that clued up on all this technical stuff.
    I was thinking of going and getting what I need.Is it worth getting a new motherboard.Do you think that will solve my problems?

  23. Yargwel

    Yargwel MajorGeek

    No - if it is the PSU that is the problem.

    Brought another pc home from work.PSU OK.
    It`s a IBM motherboard.Swapped them over with my gigabyte one,cant get anythind on monitor,power now getting to CD.IBM PC now not working with my gigabyte one?
    So thats it it`s my motherboard.Is the IBM motherboard compatible?

    Sorry for the delay in getting back.

    Now let me get this straight - When you say the PSU is OK which one do mean? the one on the borrowed PC? If that is the case have you tried that to replace your PSU?

    Or did you put the borrowed mobo in your original PC with your original PSU?

    Sorry to ask so many questions but I want to make sure I've understood you correctly. :)

  26. Omeel

    Omeel Private E-2

    Put PSU from borrowed PC into my own PC still won`t boot.
    Put my motherboard and processor into IBM machine won`t boot.
    Put my hard drive in IBM machine,cannot find operating system.

    You seem to have tried a few combinations there.

    Have you tried you mobo and PSU in your PC but with a different bootable device ie disonnecting the Hard drive and trying to boot from either a floppy or from CD?
