I have a pc here that won't power on. Everything is plugged in correctly including the power cord and the internal power cord connected to the mother board. There is a light on the motherboard that is on when the pc is plugged in. So I'm thinking its not the power supply but of course I could be wrong. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Hi

if light on mobo then also check that CPU is seated correctly and the 4 pin power cable is plugged into mobo, as well as checking that the GFX card is correctly seated and connected.

Do you get any life from the PC as in CPU HSF fan and case fans move as well as HDDs spin up?

No. Absolutely nothing happens when I try to power on.

I had the same problem once or twice and it turned out to be a dead cpu.

is the fan spinning on the back of the power supply and can you hear the power supply unit power up if not then is a dead power supply if you can hear that powering up then is something to do with to mobo.

The fan is not spinning or anything. Nothing is going on. So this PC would need a new power supply?

The short answer ... yes ...

If you're a budding electrical engineer you could pull it apart and replace whatever is the issue but I wouldn't recommend it unless you really know what your doing ...

The PSU is also the cheapest option ... if it turns out not to be the PSU, you can always keep it for another machine as their undoubtedly will be one.

The guy I was fixing it for said he smelled something burning last time he used it. I opened up the power supply and there were melted parts. I wish he had told me that before. Anyway thanks everybody for your help.

That sounds like either tampering or perhaps someone playing around with something they shouldn't. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I've never heard of a power surge or the like doing that to a PSU ...

When you next talk to him, ask him if someone could have flicked the red switch on the rear of the PSU.

    Drizzle.
I had a PC that just kept restarting itself over and over. Not realizing it, the cooling fan on the P/S stopped and the internal parts of the P/S were melted together. The top of the case was so hot to the touch that my daughter burnt her hand when she touch it, resulting in a blister

Sounds like the normal temp of an old Micro ATX machine I had ... well I'll remember that one.
