    Hi

What Windows and Service Pack version do you have?

Try this information HERE and the FixIT should work as deleting the upper and lower filters can fix CD drives not reading data properly, its a fairly common issue.

    I have windows vista

    It did not work. C R A p!
It says that something is preventing it from working. Ok- I got my computer in 2008 and have not upgraded or changed anything in all that time. I use Firefox/Mozilla too.
    Any ideas?

Windows vista came with my dell computer.

When I tried to update the dell drivers ( which it says that I need to do when I entered all my info on their sight) It try's to download new driver info but then stops saying that my computer setting's won't let it.

Do you think I need to be in Internet explorer when I do this stuff?

    Hi

Yes I would try from Internet Explorer but also further down that page is manual instructions and if you do them exactly as written it will allow you to manually delete the upper and lower filters.

Will warn you that editing the registry wrongly can cause your Windows version not to start properly so if your not happy in editing the registry, ask a family member or friend who is to do it for you.

What is your exact Dell model of PC?

When installing the new driver (generally there is none for CD/DVD drives) what was the error message you gained, in full please?

    Hi

What issues are you having downloading Internet Explorer, is it giving you any error messages and if so what?

Also could you tell us your Service Pack to Windows, this you can do by typing in the Start Search box, Winver and hit enter, the resulting box will tell you what Windows version and Service Pack you have, if no Service Pack is installed it will just state the Windows version.

As their are no CD drivers as they are build into Windows (in your case Windows Vista) then there are likely three or four explanations as to why its not reading data

    1. Is the likely upper and lower filters and it maybe the thing to try with the version of Internet Explorer you already have on your PC (comes with Vista by defualt) and then try the FixIt

if that still wont work then follow the below "exactly" as written.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461#letmefixit

    2. In Device Manager you can open up the DVD/CD Rom Drives branch and right click the Drive and choose Uninstall, then reboot and Windows will install the drive back.

    3. Could be malware, especially if you not updated your PC since you bought it, and/or part of the reason you cannot install the applications you are trying is that your Windows version is out of date, Vista is now at Service Pack 2, and in some cases (especially for Internet Explorer 9) there are a few pre-requisite updates that are needed.

Sometimes the CD driver works- like when I put in the windows vista cd last week to see if that would help. it read that. I have forgotten about Internet Explorer. it will not work- tried everything. It was there a long time ago- and I deleted it. so now it would work. crazy but true.

Thanks- but everything I have tried on the dell site does not work because I am on Mozilla/firefox. And something blocks it- I have tried EVERYTHING.

So- what would cause that I wonder? A malware?
