Can anyone help me please with this?

When Ever I click on 'Start' then Turn off computer all I now get is the hourglass stuck on. If I leave it for about 5 minutes the turn off Computer, restart etc box comes up. Then when I click on shut down the computer closes down to the blue Windows is shutting down screen but will not shut down and turn off. It just stays on this screen. So I'm having to press the reset button all the time.

When I reboot the PC back up and try and shut it down straight away again it will shut down. But If I use it for a while then try and shut down it will freeze on the same screen again.

Also when rebooting after pressing the reset button I sometimes (not always) get a message entitled "test" saying "failure CreateService. err: 1072". If I click OK (only choice), I get another box entitled "DiagAP8169" and saying "Fail to load RTL8169 diagnostic driver." If I Click on OK the pc boot resumes.

Oh and I have Windows XP SP2

    Can anyone help me? :cry

    thanks

Tried what you said but when it gets to the point where is should download win9xme2kxp-8169s(602).zip Nothing happens.

If I try to click on it manually it says page doesn't exist?

    Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried doing a shut down in safe mode?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Seems like I've had this same trouble with Realtek NIC cards in the past, having to do with driver/Service Pack conflicts...

If Safe Mode doesn't lead you anywhere, you might try grabbing the latest Realtek driver, uninstalling the NIC, then reinstalling with any updated drivers you've found...

I had a similar problem with either of the two logins on my shared XP SP3 desktop, I am NOT using an RTL8169 PCI NIC card at present but the same technology may be on board my MS-6728 motherboard as it has an onboard gigabit NIC

    First you get this

    Then you get this

    The anwer is probably

#1 if you have a driver update application like LiveUpdate 4 (MSI) use it to update your drivers or

#2 visit the REALTEK website and download and run this driver pack http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=6&PFid=6&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false, the filename I downloaded was PCI_Install_XP_2K_5719_11202009.zip (for XP)

I found the driver pack by going to: http://www.realtek.com.tw/Default.aspx
then: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ and Search for 8169

I documented my experience here: http://www.fatblokeracing.org/failure_Create_Service_err_1072_Fail_to_load_RTL8169_diagnostic_driver.shtml

Hope this helps as some of the earlier download links point to services you have to sign up for
