PCI Express vs. AGP

What's the difference between these two types of graphics cards? I'm looking at the prices of the Radeon X800XL PCI Express and AGP and they are the same.

 

PCI-E Vga card is new model for Mobo intel 775 or AMD64 it run at 16X
AGP Vga card is previous mobo model run at 8X
it depend on your Mobo supports

 

so are they the same quality? i just have a dell dimension 8300 so which one would i need?

 

PCI-Express is the newest type of uhhh connection that has been out since 2004.

PCI-express has basically 3 flavours: 2x, 8x, and 16x.

PCI-Express video cards runs through the 16x connector. Though, with sli, this drops the card to 8x.

The only difference between a 6600gt AGP card and a 6600gt PCI-Express card is basically, the agp requires a molex connector to it. From the quick scan I did, there isn't PRESENTLY any difference between the two.

I remember way back when AGP first came out. I had a compaq computer that had AGP 2x. But, found that some games ran kinda slow, so I opted to by a PCI video card and that particular game ran much faster. That was just a situation that I ran into 8 years ago.

Just remember that pic-express is still fairly new. Though, it is becoming more common.

 

PCI-Express is touted to be quicker than AGP for an equivalent graphic card, or so I am led to believe. In any case benchmark scores have always turned up with PCI-E cards edging out AGP cards by a little.

But like A.Son says, it depends if your motherboard supports AGP or PCI-E graphic cards.

Looks like you have and AGP. Check your Owners Manual to be sure. If you can't find it look here.

i'll just go with AGP then...anyone know where i can get the cheapest radeon X800XL (the cheapest i have seen is $300)

 

You may be wasting money with the 800xl,it depends which cpu you have,a 6600gt may suit your system more

I have an MSI Radeon X800XL 256MB... Though mine is PCI-E.

But it is the F-in' bomb

And I bought mine on Newegg for $292 shipping. Check there, don't know what an AGP version would cost. If you don't want to spend that much money, go with just an X800 or X800Pro, they are still a little better than the 6600GT.

Depends on if you want something that is good now and or if you want something that is top of the line now and will be more than adequate for a really, really long time.

 

ok then my last question would be if the 6600gt is smaller than the X800XL because ive heard the latter is huge.

 

Don't know, never seen a 6600GT out of the box in person. You might find some dimensions on Newegg, but yeah, the X800XL is kinda big.

 

make sure the power supply is strong enough to support ur new card!

 

I think if the card get Dual cores it is better than SLI and Crossfire
Asus Card but it is A big one that I have seen at Computer EXPO in my country.
At amoment SLI 6600Gt is still moother than 6800Gt although 3D05 points at SLI 6600Gt is alite lower.

how would i go about making my power supply strong enough for the new card?

 

Funny, today to be exact, I installed an eVGA 6600GT AGP 128MB for a customer. Requires atleast a 350W power supply and needs a power plug from the PSU as well.

Was about the same sise as my X800XL. Size doesn't seem to vary much between the two... The X800XL will basically "pwn" it in performance though.

 

Yes, well, the x800xl is more in comparison with a 6800 GT, then a 6600gt.

 

so i can't just go with a regular Conext Surge Protection outlet on the X800XL?

 

Huh?

 

i don't mean for the card itself...i mean can i continue to power my computer through the conext surge protection outlet (i'm not sure if it has 350w).
