under other devices in the device manager, the PCI modem has a question mark and in the properties it says the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28), and there is an option to reinstall which does not work. is this the reason why this laptop cannot connect, or even detect when I plug in an Ethernet cable from my router? I have verizon fios which works great wireless and wired but for some reason if I plug it into this laptop it doesn't detect it, or display any connections in network connections.

can I download a driver for this anywhere and reinstall it? will this fic this laptops problem with connecting to the internet?

    thank you,

    steve

Probably but in order for anyone to help, you need to mention the OS on the laptop, the brand of the laptop and the model name/number of the laptop.

    great thanks! i just installed

    "Driver Modem:
Toshiba Software Modem driver for Windows XP(vSM31100ALL02-RC2; 11-09-2001; 1.03M)"

its on the second page of the link you provided. now there is no "other devices" and no question marks anywhere, but still no connection or detection of vcable plugged into the ehternet port.

Possibly try updating Windows and see if it will search for the Drivers.

there were a few updates "windows update" installed a few days ago like a new sp, and a malicious software removal thing. but as far as checking I cannot do so because it requires internet connection and I cannot connect at all. i plug in the ethernet and nothing happens at all, and nothing appears in the network connections area.
