I just updated a computer not hooked up to the internet from windows 98 to windows xp. Alls well except 1 thing. No driver for the PCI Simple Communications Controller and I can't get the DSL to connect to the internet. After doing some reading I've found this to be a pretty common problem and am led to believe it's a missing modem driver. What's confusing me is it's going to be conected via ethernet with an external modem so why would the internal modem matter?.
Anyway it has a Conexant HSFI CX11252-11 modem so is this problem as easy as installing the driver for this or is there something more or different to this? The reason I'm asking and just not trying this is it's a long drive to my grandpa's house and would like to have this right in one shot so thnx for any insite.

If its the modem driver then you won't need to worry as its dsl. But if you can't get the dsl modem to connect, then its probably actually your network card driver that needs to be reinstalled.

Well, on this computer nothing led me to it being the modem. Under Devices it just showed a question mark next to unkown device with a drop down menu to PCI Simple Communications Controller but no other info. I just got the modem thing from other forums with similar problems, it just didn't make sense to me that so many same problems came back to modem drivers answers,,,,(whyz I'm asking you all here,,,,where the proz help :cool).

2 things I found when playing around with what info I could get about this PCI SCC was a listing I had no clue what it was or ment:

    PCI\VEN_14FI&DEV_2F01&SUBSYS_00C1A0A0&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&60

    and a location:

    PCI Slot 1

I could not connect to the internet and troubleshooting stated the Ethernet cable was disconnected but everything was hooked up right. The Motherboard is an AK73 Pro (A). Not sure if that helps any better but thought maybe that could help confirm your thoughts on the network card driver being the cause of the problem. Thnx for the first reply. That was fast.

Well as it turns out the object in question is the modem. I guess under devices if there is no modem listed and there is an unknown device with a question mark then using deduction I should be able to figure that out.
I'm so dumb some times. I brought grandpa's computer back to my house and pulled my modem out of mine and put it in his and xp recoqnizes it right away and that's fine now.
Didn't solve the problem though. Still can't get an internet connection via dsl. The computer recognizes the realtek fast ethernet nic but when trying to establish a connection it can't. It goes through the process of trying but states something along the lines of being slow or not at all. I was going to pull my ethernet card and try that one; thinking if the modem's that old then maybe ethernet also, unfortunately my ethernet and other modem are built into my motherboard. Guess I'll have to go buy one tomorrow.
Does this sound like the way to go to you after deleting the partition and reformating entire drive NTFS, installing xp sparkly clean and alls well (including under device manager) except connection??

P.S. I apologize to the two of you for me being a dumb *** but as I'm starting to get back on track I thought I'ld finish this here even though I am heading for hardware.

    Hey, that'll need a driver...:D ,,,

And I'm probably still missing something. ;)

Oh, and just so you know I did download the via chipset and lan chipset and not seeing anything else that I knew what to do with them I ran the exe. for each but still had same problem...Since then I've read that the AON-325 10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter should be fine with xp as should the motherboard. I'm defenitely missing something and am now reading about northbridge and southbridge drivers for motherboard.
At this point I'll start from anywhere with someone willing.

    Hi

How excatly are you hooking up to the internet, is it PC via ethernet to an external modem router or an internal one?

Also not knowing your ISP or connection type ( DSL or Cable ) when trying to connect what do you see on screen, ie. any dial-up type boxes as some ISPs use PPPoA opposed to PPPoE, I would just check in your Browsers connection settings that LAN or the correct connection is listed as you may still have a dialup connection set as default.

and if their are no listings in the Dialup connection box then click LAN and make sure Auto Detect Settings is ticked, then try again to connect to the net.

sample pic from mine as I connect to DSL via ethernet to a modem/router

It's hooked up PC via ethernet to an external modem to ATT(or SBC) yahoo dsl.
Under internet options\connections everything looks same as yours. And under LAN setting it's same as yours.

When I turn it on and windows xp starts the connectivety computer screens(for lack of the correct name) comes up in the taskbar like its searching in yellow. When I check the network connection it states that 27kb or 37 kb have been sent but none received. Also the external dsl modem does not register the ethernet at all. That lite is out completely.

Well,,,problem solved. My dad had an extra computer laying around which was heading for the garbage so I brought that home and pulled the ethernet adapter and tried that one and bingo,,,it works perfectly. Looks like it was nothing more than a bad ethernet adapter.

Thnx for your time, I really appreciate you guys doing what you do here on this site. :wave
