    Hi,
I have a Gigabyte GA-A31M-ES2l mainboard and I'm thinking of getting a GTX 285 video card. I've read that although the card is built for PCIE 2 it is backwards compatible with PCIE 1, which is what my mainboard has. But would running it on my current mainboard mean its running underpowered?
Thanks in advance for any help

Yes it should run on a PCI Express 1 slot but it may slow down the card and not run as fast as it should but it would run.

Is there any way to figure out how much it would slow the card down? It might slow it down so little its not worth worrying about, but I can't find any information on it.

Basically, PCI-E 2.0 doubles the bandwidth available to the interface.

However, there are very few cards that take advantage of the increase in bandwidth fully, so there may not be a noticeable difference in the performance of your graphics card.

Thanks for the replies, but is there any information about whether the GTX 285 takes advantage of the increased bandwidth of a PCIE 2? It'd save me buying a new mainboard if the card wouldn't even use up the bandwidth of a PCIE 1.

If the card is compatible with PCI-E 2.0, then I would expect the card, especially something as advanced as a GTX285, to use at least one and a half the bandwidth of PCI-E 1.0, and then a bit more.

However, I cannot find any information on this at this time.

Hmm, interesting topic as I'm installing a GTX 260-216 on a PCI-EX16 1.0 mobo today. I'll try and play a demo game once I get this going as Chrysis was awesome on my quad rig and hopefully my X2 3800+ dual core won't be a bottleneck. Now to install a new power supply. BTW, I'm not a gamer so the interface speed will not matter much for folding.
