WHEN I CLICK ON SOMETHING TO VIEW IT NOTHING COMES UP BUT THE BOX WITH A RED SQUARE IN IT A BLACK DOT AND A BLUE TRIANGLE, WHY CAN'T I VIEW THE FILE.

excuse me for asking the obvious... do you have Adobe Acrobat Reader?

 

If Acrobat Reader is installed, but is version four or five, not the latest version, six, uninstall it, then download the latest version from the Adobe alternate server, install it.
1. Go to this web site. http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html
2. Right click on the line Acrobat Reader 6.0 Full Version (assuming you run MS Windows)
3. Select save target as..., save the file somewhere you don't forget (desktop?)
4. Find the file, and run the installer.

If you already have the latest version of Acrobat Reader, or the above didn't work, here's two possibilities, I've never used them, but seem worthwhile.

1. Open acrobat reader and select "Edit Preferences"
2. Select "Internet"
3. Make sure the checkboxes for "Display PDF in browser" and "Check Browser settings when starting acrobat" are checked.
4. Close and then re-start Acrobat. If it offers to "fix" your settings you should be all set.

1. Go into the same preferences dialog and uncheck the box "Display PDF in browser". This will cause Adobe to spawn a separate window for PDF files.

(this list is not comprehensive, just the first things I'd do in this case)
