Slippery Slope, NO, more like a mudslide.

I'm all for the military and protecting our country, but I don't like the idea of the Government having detailed files on it's citizens.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8322795/

"The system also gives the Pentagon the right, without notifying citizens, to share the data for numerous uses outside the military, including with law enforcement, state tax authorities and Congress."

And this makes me feel better:

"The Pentagon's statements added that anyone can "opt out" of the system by providing detailed personal information that will be kept in a separate "suppression file.""

AT some point this big brother approach to holding information on every citizen is going to come, the UK are messing around with the idea of ID cards which will hold biometric data unique to you.... so as well as the card having all your data they will also hold a copy in storage for matching puropses.

Soon or or later at birth either biometric data or electronic tagging will most likey be used.....?!?

as for the "OPT" out you lot have been given across the pont it made me lmao.... I can just see it now,

LT....... Major, Mr Bloggs has said he wants to OPT out!
Major... OK LT just move him from folder A to folder B ( suppression file )

yeh like thats opting out.. moving you from one file location to another :D they still hold the data.... thats not kidding anyone I fear!

Gah, this SUCKS. ID cards should burn in hell. Ever since I did a debate last year about them I've been dead against the idea, and I am ALL for privacy. People just don't GET these things. GAH I wish the apparent few who value their privacy could have a voice!

Please, Jimmy Carter, a democrat, signed into law post Vietnam draft registration, that was 1979. Every American male, within 30 days of their 18th birthday must resigster for the draft. Try again.

The fact of the matter is that the Department of Defense has been compiling these records for years. This information is available from every public and private school in America under the Freedom of Information Act. The difference is that in the past it was compiled and maintained locally, i.e. the recruiting station for each service, for that area of responsibility.

I can understand why the DoD is compiling a central database, making it easier for all miltary recruiters to access the information, and to reduce the paperwork any given school needs to produce when requested. In the past each recruiting station, the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard would have to request this information from each school in their area of responsibility. That's 7 times each and every high school and college/university in the nation has to produce this information every school year, sometimes 14 times for colleges since that information is requested each semester. Bear in mind this information is only maintained for 2 years beyond the projected graduation date.

However, from the privacy standpoint, I am concerned. Servers that maintain personal information are HUGE targets for hackers. Unless this is a secure network that is completely separate from the WWW, there is reason to be concerned about the security of said data. As far as big brother, there a laws in this country that limit the type, amount and purpose of information gathering on US citizens and persons, and I would not want to be the person who violated those laws.

True, but...."under the new system, additional data will be collected from commercial data brokers, state drivers' license records and other sources, including information already held by the military."

And this "additional" information will be complied into one larger folder on each person.

And these laws are changing every day and they are fast becoming non-existent. With the new Patriot Act, the lines of privacy are getting very blurred, I don't know if there is a line anymore. If the government wants information on you, they don't have to go through a judge anymore. Internet service providers HAVE to hand over all information on you, heck they can find out what your favorite kind of underwear is if they want to. And there is no one watching them, there is no one they have to answer to.

Do not presume to tell me what can and can not be collected on US citizens and US persons. I did this for a living, I know what the law is. No law can change an Executive Order, which all federal agencies must comply with when gathering information. For the benifit of those who don't understand the scope and authority of an Executive Order; an Executive Order is a proclamation by the President of the United States (PotUS) that all federal agencies, which fall under the authority of the PotUS, i.e. the CIA, NSA, DOJ (FBI included), DoD and such must comply with. Executive Orders are limited in that they are only in effect for as long as that President holds office; the particular executive order in question is, Executive Order 12333--United States intelligence activities, signed by Ronald Reagan, and extended by every President since.

Driving Records, criminal records, and such are a matter of public record. There are many things that disqualify an indiviual from military service. There are people here that jump from recruiter to recruiter, trying to join the miltary, who are not qualified for various reasons. Be that medically, morally, or educationally. If a persons record is readily available to any recruiter then these individuals, who are not qualified for military service, will waste less of the recruiter's time; allowing the recruiter to focus on those who are qualified for military service.

As far as collecting data from 'commercial data bokers' , DoD has been doing that for years.

Contrary to popular belief federal agencies are still required to seek out judicial authorization when gathering information that may be used in criminal proceedings. There is still the such thing as the 4th Admendment in this country.

The draft was eliminated under Nixon and reinstated under Carter. I should know, I was among the first American males required to register for the post Vietnam draft.

    Not for long..........

"The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee is working on a bill that would renew the Patriot Act and expand government powers........letting the FBI subpoena records without permission from a judge or grand jury"

"But the measure being written by Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., would give the FBI new power to issue administrative subpoenas, which are not reviewed by a judge or grand jury, for quickly obtaining records, electronic data or other evidence..........."

The draft was eliminated late in Nixon's presidency; around 1974, if I remember correctly. I take it you were drafted sometime around 1970.

Those provisions will not pass 'Constitutional Muster' if passed as is. However, it is very likely they will be struck from the final version of the renewal of the 'PARTIOT Act'.

Yes you are correct again, right before he was impeached. I'm not sure but Lincoln started the draft in 1864. I did'nt mean that nixon was the cause of the draft. Just my personal feeling, that the draft is unfair. I lost many friends and classmates then. I won't interject on the subject again.

I can't really argue that point. With the decisions coming out of this Supreme Court, who knows. But, I can tell you that the Pentagon's motives for establishing this database aren't suspect in nature. Doesn't mean I'm comfortable with it though.

The draft never was fair, those of means were always able to escape. As far as actually drafting individuals today, the only ones talking about drafting people are a couple of really vocal democrats. Will it happen, don't know. Is it necessary right now, don't think so.
