Hey, I am buying a new PC come midnight when I get paid, but on my budget of £300 I am with little choice.

What it narrows down to is either a 3.0Ghz Pentium Dual Core

    or a 2.2Ghz Pentium Core 2 Duo.

I know the C2D has higher cache

And ive read it can be 20% or 40% faster (depending on whos told me).

But what would you guys pick?

Ill put the 2 pc's up here:

INTEL Pentium D 6.0Ghz With Dual L2 Cache
    ASRock CONROE-1333-D667R2 Motherboard
    250GB Serial ATA 2.0 With 8MB Cache
    2048MB DDR2 667Mhz PC5300 RAM Memory
    Lightscribe 20X DVD+/-RW
    Dual Layer & Dual Format
    Intel GMA950 256MB
    (Intergrated GPU)

    For £275

    OR

    INTEL Core2Duo E4500 With 2MB L2 Cache
    ASRock CONROE-1333-D667R2 Motherboard
    250GB Serial ATA 2.0 With 8MB Cache
    1024MB DDR2 667Mhz PC5300 RAM Memory
    Lightscribe 20X DVD+/-RW
    Dual Layer & Dual Format
    nVidia 8500GT 1024MB
    With 16 Stream Processors
    16X PCI-E, DirectX10 & Pixel Shader 4

    For £305

    Thank you.

What do you plan on doing with the computer. What will you mainly be using it for?

    Programs:
    Photoshop, Flash, Qwark, FruityLoops

    Games:
    SoldierFront, WoW

    Maybe others, probably not.

    Also firefox, winamp, msn etc...

    A general work/leisure computer.

the c2d is what I would go for :) less heat and betterperformance

Yeah C2D is a lot better, but it was the fact that the c2d had a lot less power behind it then the dual core...

But, I have shopped around more (and decided i will purchase tomorow morning), and my 2 new choices are:

    AMD Phenom™ 9500 Quad-Core Processor VS INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6750 4MB CACHE 1333 MHZ

with NVIDIA® GeForce 7050 - YES 7 Series 256 Bit Geforce graphics vs NVIDIA 7200 512MB TURBO CACHE GE-FORCE PCI EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD

everything else is spec'd the same...

    £335 vs £312

Does anyone have input? I am looking around but can't see any reason to choose one over the other...

The one in red type is an on board GPU, and the one in blue isn't, but it's still a pretty low end video card. I'd save a bit of money on the CPU, and spend it on a better video card. The Geforce 8600 is very affordable right now, great performance considering the price...

does the NVIDIA GE-FORCE 8500GT DDR2 512MB PCI EXPRESS compete with the 8600? I can get hold of this one for a small extra but i would need to pay full price for the 8600

    Oh, and i havn't ordered =]
