Pentium M and Celeron M

Hi,

I have recently got hold of a Celeron M 380 Processor - 1.6 Ghz

I already have a Pentium M 1.6 725 - Also 1.6 Ghz

What in performance terms is the difference between the two I know that the Pentium version has 2 megs of L2 cache compaired to the 1 meg L2 cache of the celeron.

And also if anyone knows how the Celeron 1.6 would compare to a Athlon XP 2000 - I think it would out perform the Athlon hands down but my friend seems to think differently

The reason I ask the above as I have a athlon 2000 file server and I was going to replace it with the Celeron 1.6 as it has MUCH better power consumption (the server is on 24/7 so over a year I would save some power!)
and I thought it would out perform the Athlon. the server is also a media server and converts video files on the fly for my media players via Nero Home.

I'm a little confused... The Celeron M 380 and the Pentium M are both mobile processors. The Athlon XP 2000+ is a desktop processor. There is no way any kind of Celeron processor will fit into a motherboard that an Athlon XP is currently in. You would need a new (desktop?) motherboard that supports a Celeron M... (I'm assuming your fileserver is a desktop PC, not a laptop) Also, the Pentium M processor is going to be quite a bit faster than the Celeron M.

Secondly, my guess would be that the Celeron M 380 would outperform the Athlon XP 2000+ in most applications although it is a little like comparing apples and oranges.

 

Well the xp 2000 will pretty much kick the snot out of your p4m, let alone the celeron, having said that, the p4 will handle 2-3 tasks at one time better than the xp. Intel chips vs amd,size for size, never had a chance till now. ed

 

WRONG. This article shows a Pentium M 755 is somewhat close to an Athlon 64 3200+. Therefore, we can assume that the Pentium M 725 is going to easily outperform the Athlon XP 2000+. My guess is that the Celeron will also although it would probably be close. Both of those Intel CPUs are nearly one generation newer than the Athlon 2000.

I love AMD but the Pentium M will squash the XP 2000

 

errm where did you get that infomation from!! my Intel Mobile 1.6 kicks the ass out of the XP 2000 in all fields.

 

Yeah I was happy about the 1.6 P4 M being faster than the XP 2000, as I have a 770 Mobile Processer and its faster than my Athlon 64 3500. wasnt sure if the Celeron M was worth changing for the Athlon XP2000. But now I know it is. thanks for the useful infomation.

 

Its the Celeron M i wanted to know about! I know the Pentium M is better!

 

I didnt say I was going to use the same motherboard ! I have a socket 479 board waiting to be used.

Well the comparision chart was for a p4m 775,not a 725. Show me one cpu, lets say a 1.6 that will out bench any amd at 1.6. The 775 you used as a comparision was a 2.3-4. not fair. You can get sandra lite, it has built in bench marks for comparision, just because the p4 is newer dont mean squat. ed
