Hello- My Windows XP Pro SP3 machine is equipped with an Intel Pentium4 2.93GHz, LGA775, L2= 1MB, non hyper threading CPU. I would like to know if I can replace this with a Pentium4 3.4GHz, LGA775, L2=2MB, 800MHz FSB, w/ hyper threading CPU.

The MOBO supports 800MHz FSB, both CPU's are 65W chips. I can get the upgrade for $25 and it's a simple swap, if compatible.

Could someone please advise?... Thank-you in advance for your help.

All things being equal you should be able to swap them out no problem.

It all depends on the bios support for that cpu, to find whether your motherboard supports it go to the motherboard manufacturers website and look at the cpu support list.

If it doesn't support it the worst I would expect would be a bios update, if you can't find the cpu support list read the bios update readme's for cpu support additions and update as necessary.

If your stuck or struggling to find the information post your computer specs most importantly your motherboard model and we'll try to help:)

Thanks for the reply. Well, I can supply the MOBO specs- I don't think there is any kind of compatibility chart(s) for it. There are no BIOS updates available for this board.

I am thinking that I may be able to even go with a 2 core CPU- Pentium D or beyond. I have access to these older chips, new, at a very reasonable price.

The Attached .zip Files are from SIW and reflect the machine in its present state.

Thanks for helping me with this.

Yeah, I agree with you. For $125 I can throw a new mobo and a Phenom II X4 955 and 4 GB of DDR3 at it. I would just have to do a fresh install of XP Pro, transfer Docs & Settgs, and reload the progs. According to a chart I saw at portatech.com it would be a speed improvement of 3972 on PassMark.
I prefer Intel chips over AMD, but this is just a standby/ reference machine. New machine is running Ivy Bridge i7-3770K- not yet fired up.
Thanks for all your help, Rikky!
