    Hi all,

Is there a FREE way to permanently destroy CD's & DVD's other than burning and polluting the environment.

    Are Disk Media Recyclable?
Keeping in mind that the data is from a business, data recovery must not be an option.
I know there are shredders that will do the job but the key word today is "Free"

    Thank you.

Well even if you shred them, you need to throw the remains away, which still pollutes a landfill.
5 seconds in a microwave, will completely toast one if you want to kill the data.
Put it in a paper towel to keep the dust secured.

    Might check this site out.

As for the data, simply erase all of it before shipping it off to be recycled, or overwrite it with gibberish...like the Paris Hilton thread for instance.:D

    Touchy subject, be careful.

With regards to the cd and dvd destroying, microwaving them will break your microwave (as well as being very dangerous).

Best bet is to recycle them, there are many outlets across the world.

Microwaving does work but do not use the one you eat out of. Turn a paper cup upside down and lay the CD on top. I believe I saw in another site where they did 15 seconds. You can also hold it over a hot electric stove element and melt it down.

I hear that alligators work well for this purpose. You might need to catch a few 'gators and starve them for a bit, they are not too picky about what they eat, but politicians... Even reptiles have a little respect for themselves.:D

If someone comes up with something, even if it isn't free, I think I'm about ready to invest!

Use a belt sander on the CD/DVD with 80 or 60 grit paper. You will still have to dispose of it by some means. Recycle plastics.

Having worked with many Americans across the globe, I have confidence in their sense of humour.

Actually I recently had reason to physically destroy some CD's and was suprised to find out just how difficult it is. They are tough little .*!#s. I found a gas burner / blowtorch effective but the fumes.

Eventually I snapped them in a large vice and finished the job with a large hammer.

Wear a breathing mask if you sand or burn the fumes and dust are toxic.

Yeah, I have. It actually doesn't even take 5 seconds.

Why are people acting as if this is a joke? He's asking a legit question. Come on people let's stop polluting our world! I'd like to know any answers just as much as he would. I too hate to throw out cds and dvds in the regular garbage.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if you physically break the disc and then send it to a recycling depot that accepts them I would imagine that the data is not recoverable (or at least rather difficult) ?

The only ones I generally dispose of are burn-failures (older cdrw drive does this a lot even on slow burning speeds) and I do this by folding the disc in half in one hand until it snaps or shatters (watch the eyes)

Sorry for the joke. If you think about how a CD works, you can actually break it into 2 simple parts. The thick plastic part, and the thinner than paper foil part that actually holds the data. With minimal work, you can easily remove all or most of the part that holds the data, send the plastic part to be recycled, and shred up the foil looking stuff. (Thin layer is made out of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_disk) Possibly recyclable, you would need to research that aspect of it.

Even if you just removed the thin part and tossed it, it would take a lot of CD's to equal the plastic in one.

Or we could make AOL take them. They flooded the word with CD's and floppies...:D

Oh yeah, pict of CD included...

I did a little looking around and found a few links you might be interested in. A friend of mine used to make cool looking spinners out of PVC pipe and old CDs.
