    Hi All,
First off let me say that this is an awesome site with tons of useful info.
I have a PC in the den that is used by me, my sister, and my 2 young nephews. I would like it so that whenever my nephews log on to their desktop, the taskbar is completely hidden; not just auto-hidden, but completely gone. This will prevent them from clicking the Start button, etc. I have already had to redo this PC about 5 or 6 times because of missing files, deleted items, etc.
Is there any reg tweaks to do this, or Auto-It scripts, or VB code snippets?
Thanks for any resplonses, and thanks for a great forum.
    Regards,
    mike

You can right click on the taskbar in an empty spot, then properties, then auto hide. It takes 5 seconds and is an easy fix. You could create a second user account and severly limit what can be done, well beyond just the taskbar as well.

    Hi Major Attitude,
Thanks for the quick response. I guess what I meant to say was "completely and permanently" remove the taskbar. I had tried this approach before, but with enough random mouse movements, they eventually hit the spot, the task bar pops up, and that's all, folks.

Testing a reg hack for you now, will check right back if it works.

No go on reg hack, it leaves start there. Next option:

    Unlock taskbar
Click it and minimize it down to a little line
Go to properties and lock the taskbar

Another not perfect solution that may do it.

Found this, not tested, if your feeling brave, it comes from the Winguides people who I trust. Let me know how you make out.

Disable Menu Bars and the Start Button (Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP) Popular

This tweak can be used to disable the menu bar in standard Windows applications and the Start Button.

This tweak can be easily applied using WinGuides Tweak Manager.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Rename the key by placing a dash "-" in front of the GUID (i.e. {-5b4dae26-b807-11d0-9815-00c04fd91972}).

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This tweak may cause a problem with the taskbar appearance when Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater is installed. If you experience a problem please reverse the tweak to restore the original setting.

I understand the motivation here, but anything can be accessed by running the task manager, clicking on File, and selecting New Task. Of course, you could disable the task manager too.

That article describes how to re-enable the task manager is it has been disabled (like by a virus or malware) but you can use the info to disable it too... then again, anyone can go into regedit and fix that too (unless you rename regedit to something else). It seems to me that setting up a VERY limited account would be easier that having to disable one thing to prevent the re-enabling of something else. Where does it end?
    That's my 2 cents ;)
Good luck, and I apologize for the 'hijack'....

    Hi dlb,
No apology necessary. These are 2 very curious boys, and any locking down is welcome.

    PS
Thanks for the info, MA. I will try it out tonite.

Nope, no apology needed, I was running dry as was obvious, so any other insight is helpful. Good luck Mike, holler back!

    Hi All,
The solution is at hand!! I used a combination of a shareware program called TaskBar Hide, which can be found with Google, and a 4 line script written with AutoIt, which can also be found with Google. Works like a charm!
Thanks to all of those who helped me out.
    Regards,
    Mike
