I have been having serious malware/virus problems since June 21 or 22. Due to work, vacations, and general life I have not been able to attack it appropriately. Recovery from surgery has finally allowed me the time and patience to consult with majorgeeks (once again) and follow your well-detailed and expert instructions.

It all started on the evening of June 22, when a fake security program repeatedly attempted to load or redirect me with fake alerts. I used task manager to end the program, again and again. Here and there, I have attempted deleting various things that were installed/exectued on that date and attempted to use MSE and Malwarebytes to cure it. During the course of the summer I did not use this computer for internet access, but it seemed things were getting worse anytime I ran it outside of safe mode. I believe the whole system has been hijacked and used from remote access, and set up additional administrator settings?

PROBLEM: MS Security Essentials has at various times detected Win32/Tracur.Q DOS/Alureon.A Win32/Vundo.gen!A JS/BlacoleRef.A and exploits: Java/CVE-2010-0840.DR and Java/Midesq.A
PROBLEM: IE has been redirected. Settings change (e.g. ALL cookies allowed)
PROBLEM: programs won't run / won't update. This has improved since running recent scans/tools.

I have followed the Malware Removal guide, the tips for fixing Google redirection problems, flushed DNS, etc.
PROBLEM STILL: IE gives message "your security settings are putting your computer at risk" even though I set accordingly. I also receive error message "Search provider default - a program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider setting for IE. IE has reset your original search provider, Google." AND the whole style of the window has changed.

Not sure what else is messed up, and not sure exactly what has been repaired.

Attaching logs in this post and additional logs to follow.
THANKS for any advice and attempted fix.

I don't know how you all do this in your "spare" time- helping out us folks who (speaking for myself) may do more damage before finally taking a calculated approach to the battle.
    :wave

Many thanks for giving us a competent resource.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Chasling,
thank you for that speedy reply

I had actually run the MBR check as well as the TDSSKiller and Root Repeal, based on links and recommendations provided.
These were run prior to the final Mbam, SAS, ComboFix, and MGTools.

If I need to run some fresh ones, I will gladly do it. Otherwise, attached logs.
I also have a prior HiJackThis log if needed.

THANK YOU for looking at this!

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\914630430
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Open IE, go into tools > internet options > advanced tab, and click on RESET Internet Explorer's settings. Make any difference?
Give me the exact file path of the threats it is finding please. Just listing those names is no good.
How does your browser behave now?

Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Many thanks for your reply, Kestrel13!

No problems running ComboFix except I don't see that the log was generated? I am attaching the only text file named "ComboFix" that appeared after running the script. My computer rebooted on its own immediately when CF had completed its course.

I could not run ESET scanner ... due to the browser problems I continue to have. I attempted reset as you recommended, but I continue getting the same "change your security" message on the top message bar. I noticed when ESET attempted to run, I could not see the Active X message bar --- in other words, had no opportunity to "allow" it to run and so I was stuck.

Another major alteration is I can no longer view HIDDEN files and folders. Folder options revert back.

You questioned file paths for the trojans/exploits found earlier:
I am also attaching an MBAM scan log from 7-03-11 (when things were obviously getting serious). Please forgive me if you don't want/need this but there is previous quarantine/removal information.

and dating between 9/26/11 and 9/29/11:
    Exploit:Java/Midesq.Acontainerfile: C:\WINDOWS\temp\jar_cache6502858249566345712.tmp
    file: C:\WINDOWS\temp\jar_cache6502858249566345712.tmp->fernand.class
Trojan:JS/BlacoleRef.C sometimes "Removed" and sometimes "Allowed" ???
    containerfile: C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A1GOR301\lazkano_net[1].htm
    or \72AOAL09
    file: C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A1GOR301
    (or) \72AOAL09
    (or) \XBGFTH5Y
    (or) \lazkano_net[1].htm->(UTF-8)->(SCRIPT0006)

I eagerly await further instructions/ recommendations and sincerely thank you for your time and expertise.

That did not run properly for some reason.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    • cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    • nwktst<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • analyse <-- this attempts to run HijackThis. Be sure to click the Accept button twice in the license agreement popup or it will just sit there and wait.
Now look for the C:\MGlogs.zip file and attach it no matter what happened while doing the above.

I am attaching the new MGtools log after following your instructions.

Because I did not originally see the hijackthis log in the zip file that was produced, I added it (from the MGtools folder), knowing that it had indeed run on command. I also saw filelog was in there, so threw that in also. (All from this same date)

I did not have any error messages except for "an installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization," which I believe I always see when running MGtools (?) and I click IGNORE and the program continues.

After running ShowNew and skimming the produced log, something caught my eye: a "password change" was indicated "109 days ago." This would be exactly the point in time that everything went awry. I never made any type of 'administrator' password change.

Kestrel13! --- thank you for your continuing support!

Busy weekend, sorry for bit of a delay with a response.

Now let's flush the Java Cache

    • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
    • Double click the Java icon (be patient, it may take a while to open)
    • Now click the General tab and under the Temporary Internet File area
    • Click the Settings button and then click the Delete Files... button.
    • In the next popup click OK.
If you have multiple Java plugin icons in Control Panel follow the above to clear all their caches.

Now let's flush the FireFox Cache
    To flush your FireFox Cache:

    • click Tools
    • select Options
    • select Privacy
    • in the section labeled Private Data click Clear Now

Now let's flush the Internet Explorer Cache
To flush your Internet Explorer Cache:

    • click Tools
    • Internet Options
    • Now on the General tab and click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too
    • Click OK.
    • When it finishes Click OK.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

What is inside of this folder?
    C:\091611

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Please run ccleaner (Not the registry section, simply the cleaner)

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this. (If these instructions do not produce a C:\mglogs.zip then please follow my previous instructions by using the command prompt)

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Love your new icon :)
Hope you had a good weekend.

Followed your instructions below and attached logs. I don't think I have Firefox program. (prob deleted it in a panic over the summer --- dumping things I didn't use.)

The folder you inquired about is Quicken related.

Trouble updating latest version of CCleaner ["unable to open internet site..."] Still had trouble downloading and still saw message bar "Your current security settings put your computer at risk." Tried to reset all to default but no luck. Used the last version I had of CCleaner v3.10.1525

So, still having IE problems. Still feeling unsafe. I basically use my netbook but do miss the desktop for various things.

    THANK YOU

    Thanks!

We need to run an OTL Fix

    • Right-click OTL.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
    • Copy and Paste the following code into the Image textbox. Do not include the word Code
    Code:
    Code:
    :otl
    @Alternate Data Stream - 88 bytes -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\REGWIZ.EXE:SummaryInformation
    @Alternate Data Stream - 88 bytes -> c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe:SummaryInformation
    @Alternate Data Stream - 144 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:4A74A9A7
    @Alternate Data Stream - 140 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:D1B5B4F1

    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\kzhtgiwi.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\lfiwjkjn.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ozjnrkme.dat

    :commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [REBOOT]
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. ATTACH that report in your next reply.

I want you to run TDSSkiller again and attach the log.

This is something I suggest you ask about in the software forum. I found something when I researched that you could try

Now run OTL again like you did in post # 14. Attach the log from that too.

Thanks for the suggestion about the IE search provider issue ... will check it out.

Attaching logs after following your instructions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
