I use a remote desktop connection to log into my work server and my personal hard drive on my laptop is showing up under "other" and is fully accessible from within my company's secure server. Is this normal and would they at any time have access to my personal laptop? I can open files, drag and drop from their server to my hard drive and vice versa. Seems like a security issue on both sides. Am I just paranoid or should my harddrive not be visible and accessible on their server?

Is it a normal default? Yes. Is it good? No.

You might notice when you RDP to the server that it tries to load your printers from home too and will sometimes fail looking for the drivers.

I'm not sure how "secure" your server is if you are using RDP from home to access it. Depending on what you are doing on the server, there are usually better, more secure ways to access what you need. If you can't connect differently and if you must keep your hard drive attached while you are working on the server, you can turn off what is accessed in RDP

In XP, on the bottom of the first window is
    Options>>
    Local Resources (tab)
    More (button)
It asks: Choose the devices and resources on this computer that you want to use in your remote session.
Expand Drive and uncheck your external drive letter.
