I am running a gateway 350xl with XP Pro. Has DVD burner.

I moved a large folder filled with family photos to the Win CD writer. I just highlighted the file, clicked "move file" and selected the writer drive for move to location.

I put a DVD in the drive since it is a dvd burning drive. The program recognized that it had a DVD in the drive since it allowed by to put 4 gig into the writer for burning. It looked like it was going to work, and was writing for 45 minutes or so. Then there was an error in the writing process. writing unsuccessful or something like that.

The files look like they are still there, when I attemped to open the files back up on the computer, they wouldn't open in any type of software. No previews, nothing.

Help! I lost 2 years of family photos. New babies, ball games, plays, Christmas presents, and easter egg hunts! I'm desperate!

When you copy files over to a CD to write, or in your case a DVD the files are copied to a temp folder. Normally its under C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ if I remember right.

The way that I would find these files is to download google desktop and let it index your data, and then search for one of the files. Alternativly you could use Windows search to see if it will show any of the files.

Let me know if you need more help and I can look further into it.

Any other ideas? All the files are in the folders they are supposed to be, they just won't open. The temp files were erased by Windows Washer before I knew the photos were messed up. Isn't there some way to undo the formatting or whatever that is done to a file to prep it for CD/DVD writing?

Sounds like a tough one... What were the files names? Did you do just a plain search if c:\ for *.jpg and see if you found any of them?

Windows Washer, not always such a good program for reasons like this. If they are priceless photos there are some applications out there that will let you find the files that have been deleted (reallocated to be written over) but have not yet been written to, and recover those files. I would start looking for a program like that, and the sooner the better. I fear that it may be too late. You posted this initially some time ago.

Could I email you one of the photo files, and you see if you can get it to open?
