PhotoShop :(

This is depressing...I figure I must be just about over the hill with technology as I feel COMPLETELY overwhelmed (intimidated?) by the PhotoShop program that was just given to me as a gift...I have NO CLUE where to start, what to do, what to not do, example:

Right-off the bat, I am faced with what appears to me to be "several (five/5) programs within the program" (please see screenshot) - from QuickTime on down (except for the two "Nikon" things there that were also just installed... I mean, at least two of them have the word "Photoshop in them...I select one, and am prompted (CONFRONTED!) with an "option" to create an adobe I.D." ...... is this something I REALLY wish to do? More junk mail advertising, or is it something one would "NEED" to utilize PS?? Is it free (because if it's not then it's "not for me" as I barely survive as it is on a disability ("FIXED") income?

I am so upset I don't even know what exactly it is that I'm asking here...perhaps for a SIMPLE, HONEST, straightforward tutorial for getting the most out of the program on less than a "low budget" ... I am really working here with a "no budget".

Any all replies appreciated - thanks, and in advance,
    g...

Hi...to answer the one question...no...photoshop is not free. It looks like what you have installed is Photoshop Elements. It retails for $79.99 on the Adobe site and looks like you can get a trial for it.

If it was given to you with a gift and the Nikon software came with it, I'd say it was probably software that came with someone's Nikon camera. I'm not sure that it'll be the full licensed version or not. You can go into add/remove and uninstall the Nikon stuff.

Adobe Elements is for photo editing.
Adobe Premiere Elements is for movie editing.
I have no idea what Arcsoft connect is.

It sounds like trial software that came bundled with a Nikon CD, but I don't know. Where did you get it and is it a CD. What does it say on it?

Thanks but no ma'am...I was with my Friend when she bought it (Photoshop Elements 9 - $99.99 @ Best Buy)...she bought me the camera separate. I merely installed one of the two disks that came with PS...though the other one says for "Mac"...

And oh - "Arcsoft" came with it...downloaded from the disk...? (which is "sorta" my whole point...WHY OH WHY on EARTH do they make this stuff so confusing??

It (TOO much tech crud/crap) is really turning me, personally - for one - "OFF", anymore...makes me just want to go out and play in the woods! Makes me want to go do something that's a bit more, how should I say - "REAL".

I realize my original post may be rather confusing, but that's, again, sort of my point.

I think this (below) is the main thing that drove me to post in the first place, and start this thread:

    ~*Creating an "Adobe I.D."?*~

    Ah...okay. So it's a licensed version.

Generally whenever you load any software you have bought on disk, onto your computer, you have the option for installation. You can either choose 'Recommended' (which I personally, don't recommend), or you can choose 'Custom'. You should always choose Custom. That will generally give you a list of what will be installed and you can usually opt out by unchecking things. Most software offers different options and it's only crud if you have no use for it. I'm not sure why they would put Nikon stuff in there. That seems odd to me, but you can certainly uninstall it without an issue.

I think the ID gives you access to some things on the Adobe site. Honestly, I can't answer that. I use Photoshop and don't have an ID.

I guess the question is, can you open up the programs without it? If so, then don't worry about an ID if you don't want to create one.

Did you install this because you have an interest in editing your photos?

There are tons of tutorial sites out there such as this one: http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-tutorials/Photoshop-Elements-tutorials/Most-popular/1/

You can get as much from the program or as little as you want. Some people are happy with just cropping pictures or getting rid of red eye. Some (like me) like to get into the more complex things. It's all just going forward and doing it and looking through the tutorials you can find.

    Hi again and thanks again...

The Nikon stuff is there because it installed (I installed it) from the disk that came with the Nikon camera that was also (another) Gift on the same day that I received the PS prog.

And yes, I would like to do some photo editing...as far as I know, that's the primary purpose of PS, though it wouldn't surprise me if it did more than that...it's a rather large prog (more than 1 & 1/2 Gigs) ...

So yes, I think that's it (though I am CERTAIN I'll have all sorts of questions that come with this for me?) - and I'll check-out the link you were so kind to provide - thasnk you again -

    glenn
PS ~ Now that I think about it, I think I opted for a "Trial" on the PS disk somewhere, as I was afraid if I screwed-up the standard program I would have less trouble trying to recover from it in the trial (for some reason???)...

I misread your earlier comment about the camera. I thought the friend had bought it for themselves.

You want the Nikon Transfer. The link to Nikon Folder probably links to their site? It won't hurt you to open it and look and see what it is. It could just be quick links to get help. If you don't want it, you won't need it for the camera to work.

Photoediting is pretty fun. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Just open up a picture and start working on it. The more you practice, the easier and more comfortable you'll find it. If you have specific questions regarding it, just ask away.

If you have something specific you want to do with photos and don't know where to start, just give a shout out.

It's really one of those things you shouldn't be scared of. You can't mess anything up. If you don't like what you did, don't save it. Or, just always use your 'Save as' option so you can keep your original photo. :)

Sorry about that, didn't know there was much difference as I don't use either. Just that I had those links from another site in case I ever wanted to use Photoshop.

    My dear geek Amiga's and Amigo's ~

I would like to revisit this thread which I started, however, I firstly need to learn/better figure-out/understand this new (new to me) Nikon CoolPix L22 that I was given at the same time I received the PS ("Elements 9"?) as a Gift...

I'm told I need to "format" the camera (or the memory card?), and I am not finding that info in the owners/operators manual.....

Thank you all VERY much...I really am GREATLY appreciative of your time and efforts, I think I simply jumped the gun on trying to take-in PS...I think it may be a lot (TOO much?) for me to try to grasp currently, or con-currently....

    I'll be "BACH"..............................

    Hi

Are you talking about 'reformatting' your memory card? That's a good practice to get into after you've uploaded all your photos to your computer. That way you won't get ghosting which can happen because you'll still have remnants left on your memory card.

In order to do that, you should be able to go to click on your Menu button. On the left side, you'll see little pictures. One should be of what looks like a wrench. That's your Settings menu. Click on that and you should see on the right the option to 'Format Card'. Select it and you will probably be told that if you do it will delete all files. As long as you have uploaded them to your computer, go ahead and click Okay (or Yes).

Posted info on that in Glenn's other thread HERE about the format and I agree with you on ghosting and possible corruption of image data.

But I don't understand - the directions I was pointed to said to "remove" the card?? Would that not defeat the entire whole purpose, please?? :confused :confused :confused :confused :confused

Remove the card if you want to format the internal memory, which as per the manual is 19Mb- only good for a few pictures. The memory card needs to be in the camera to format.
    Cheers

PS/EDIT - OH! Perhaps the instructions were merely informing me of "how to remove/install" the card? In any event, I believe my answer is "format with the card "IN"...correct? Doing it otherwise would not make sense, eh?

Thank you so much for this...however, I don't know "what" I wish to do...that's why I come here with my silly (and often redundant and incessant) questions...:-o:confused:-o

Yes, you must format with it in your camera.

You should be able to do that using the instructions I gave you in post #15.
