php function returning a gd image

    i need to write a PHP function that returns a image created by the GD plugin. The problem is that when you call imagepng($img) it just just pushes the data stream out to the browser and it doesn't treat it as and image just text. I am not sure if that makes sense but if anyone has any suggestions pleas let me know.
