PHP Question

Is it possible to use the mail() function to send an email from say a gmail account or a hotmail account, to a hotmail or gmail account? I know you can send stuff on smtp emails, but im not sure on how to do it with pop3 or html, or if its even possible. Thanks.

mail() supports pop3 but it looks like the server the code is executed on has to be the mail server

Is there a small script that will let me do this? just the script itself. my goal is to make a thing (not sure what yet) where users can send me stuff to my gmail or hotmail address through my website.
