Physical memory hold up

I have Windows ME. Sounds like everyone hates that. My system Information show a total physical memory of 126.45 MB and an available physical memory of 236.00 KB. How can I find out what is using the available memory and hanging onto it. I've run a virus scan that came up clean. Please help if anyone can.

It depends on what is running in the background. You can go through the steps here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 and run HiJackThis and post the log per the instructions posted in the thread that I linked to.

Welcome to MG. Process Explorer will tell you what processes are running and what is hogging your CPU.

Main point omitted from

, above, is that it will also tell you what programs (handles?) are hogging your CPU cycles. I use Process Explorer. I sort PE to descending CPU use. Then shrink the screen to show the top 5-6 users of CPU cycles. Then minimise it so it is instantly available when I need to check something out. Works very well, excellent, in fact.

Ram2Free is a small memory monitoring/information/freeing utility. Ram2Free does not run in the taskbar and use system resources when not in use. It also does not install any ActiveX controls, Ads, Registry Keys, or unneeded stuff. It is also totally FREE.. Memory is freed by allocating (filling) all 16 pages of physical RAM forcing windows to unload unused modules that are left in RAM by programs. This memory is then released back to the system resulting in that clean rebooted feeling. Ram2Free requires the latest VB 6.0 runtime files.

Warning. I don't personally know anyone who has tried these on WinME, so proceed at own risk.

I use AnalogX--MaxMem on my W98SE systems. I run it 2-3 times to free up the maximum memory it can. Then I usually shut it down as it can interfere with running programs occasionally. Frees RAM from 20% free up to 60% free on this PC after I run it 2-3 times. Hope these help.

Other solution is to get more RAM, but you know that already.

To all that have responded. I don't know if I'm responding the correct way, but I'm trying.
OK I disabled system restore...enabled viewing of hidden files etc...Ran(not in safe mode)Bitdefender online scanner. No problems were found.
Ran TrendMicro Housecall= No problems found.
Ran CCleaner, it deleted temp internet files and cookies.index.dat
Ran Ram2Free and after that my results were Total physical memory 126.45MB and Available physical memory of 44.20 MB. This is better,but,,,
Is this good? Is my problem fixed?

What is your system resources?

Rightclick on my computer, and click properties, then click on performance (I believe), this will give you the total system resources you have available.

How many small icons do you have next to your clock? A lot? What are they?

Thanks Theefool for responding. My system resources is 69% free
One small icon beside clock is AVG anti virus. Lexmark printer is usually there but I (end task) on that.
Someone told me that windows has a setting that has changed automatically that is causing this problem. What do you make of that?
