Help! I don't get it, now when I try to do a "save as" on a pic in an e-mail for example, it will only allow me to save it in .bmp format. I used to have several format options, like .jpg, .gif etc. What up wid dat???

It's driving me crazy -- any ideas how to get it back???

"hep me" "hep me" i just can't "hep mesef".

    Thanks,

    Cherie

That happened to me years ago--it defaults to saving as an untitled bmp. There is a fix out there, I've used it, I'll look around and see if anything sounds familiar.

Edit: I just googled untitled.bmp and now remember my problem was with Internet Explorer. I'm not sure about email. Was it Web email or an email program like Outlook Express?

It was Outlook -- old version MS Office 2000 version. I recently started using it as my Outlook Express kept crashing and I'd lose all my friggin' e-mails....grrrrrrrrrr. So some dude told me that OE has that problem when you try to store too much.

Hummmm, I'll bet you're definitely on to something though cuz it seems as if it may have started happening when I switched to Outlook from Outlook Express.

Thanks so much to both of you.

I have been able to run it through another Photo software, but it's a major pain in the butt if there are a ton of pics. KNow what I mean, Vern?

    Thanks again,

    Cherie

Thanks for the info Halo :)

I would definitely try this as I remember the fix I used as both coming from MS and being an easy solution to a very annoying problem.

Thanks sooo much for the info. Well, it fixed the problem in IE, but still have the issue in Outlook 2000. Grrrrrrr. Any more ideas???

    Thanks again all!

I see the same thing with Outlook 2003, based on some test files sent to myself. As a test, I created message in OE, inserted a photo, but could only save it as .bmp when received in Outlook. I then tried attaching a photo instead of inserting it into the body of the message. In that case, I could save the photo, i.e., attachment, as a .jpg file when received in Outlook.

So, if you find the same behavior in Outlook 2000, you might ask the sender to send the files as attachments. If that's not an option, then I don't know what to tell you.

And, perhaps Windows Live Mail would be an option here. I haven't used it, so I can't say whether it would allow saving in .jpg format.

Yes if the original image is in .jpg then you can right click save as .jpg ( or other formats ) in Windows Live Mail.

at this point the only workaround thats to hand is this one http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/saveembeddedpictures.htm

but I will get on one of my PCs with outlook and see if there are any other easier routes to right click save as .jpeg ( only issue is I dont have Outlook 2000, I use 2007 and it maybe vastly different in its abilities )

    Hey all,

Hadn't even heard of Thunderbird - Mozilla's e-mail software package. I'm trying it now and so far, so good. It took WAY too long to import my Outlook jazz which just confirms my suspicions that it is hosed. Hope I haven't started Thunderbird with a screwed up base. Know what I mean, Vern?

Also, had not heard of Windows Live. So it looks as if I need to be staying more current. It's such a Biiiii-otch getting old....hehehehee.

Thank all of you so much! I did try to utilize the macro fix for Outlook and was unsuccessful. I may try again when my brain becomes unfogged (so that may mean, NEVER!), just so I will know if the fix is valid for Outlook 2000.

Ya'll are the bomb for trying to help out this dazed and confused dinosaur.

    Hugs,
    Cherie:confused
